The Holiness of the Priesthood: How does the law of priestly holiness in the book of Numbers teach us about the importance of purity and dedication in the worship of God? (Numbers 18:1-7)

The book of Numbers contains several laws that were given by God to the people of Israel through Moses. Among these laws, we find the law of priestly holiness, which is found in Numbers 18:1-7. This law concerns the sanctity of priests and the importance of purity and dedication in the worship of God.

According to the law of priestly holiness, only priests descended from Moses’ brother Aaron could serve in the sanctuary and offer sacrifices to God. Furthermore, they were to be consecrated and set apart for the service of God. Those who were not priests and approached the shrine could be punished with death.

The law of priestly holiness teaches us that purity and dedication are fundamental to the worship of God. Those who wish to serve God must do so with all reverence and respect, for He is a holy and just God. Purity is important because it reflects the holiness of God and separates the priest from the impurities of the world. Dedication is important because it demonstrates the priest’s commitment to serving God and willingness to obey his commandments.

Today, although there is no longer a need for a Levitical priesthood as in the Old Testament, the importance of purity and dedication in the worship of God is still relevant to us. In 1 Peter 2:9, Peter refers to all Christians as a holy priesthood: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people chosen to proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into its marvelous light”. This means that all of us as Christians have a responsibility to be holy and devoted to God.

In Romans 12:1, Paul also exhorts Christians to offer their bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This means that we must dedicate ourselves to God in all areas of our lives and strive to be pure and holy, both in our behavior and in our attitudes and thoughts.

Therefore, the law of priestly holiness in the book of Numbers teaches us that purity and dedication are fundamental to the worship of God. They reflect God’s holiness and demonstrate our commitment to serving Him. As Christians, we should strive to be holy and dedicated to God in all areas of our lives.
