The Quest for Divine Justice: Tobias’ Example Against Israel’s Oppressors

The book of Tobias is one of the deuterocanonical books of the Bible, that is, it is not part of the Jewish canon, but is accepted by the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. In it, we can find the story of Tobias and his quest for divine justice against the oppressors of Israel.

Tobias was a righteous and God-fearing man who lived in the city of Nineveh in Assyria. During the reign of Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, he was deported to the city of Ragés in Media, where he married a woman named Anna. Tobias was blind, yet he continued to trust in God and practice justice.

Tobias was once accused of theft and sentenced to death. He cried out to God for justice, and his prayer was heard. God sent the angel Raphael to help him prove his innocence and recover his wealth. Rafael appeared disguised as a distant relative of Tobias, and together they traveled to the city of Ecbatana, where they recovered the stolen money and found a cure for Tobias’ blindness.

However, Tobias’s story is not only about regaining his wealth and health, but also about his quest for divine justice against Israel’s oppressors. When Tobias was in Ecbatana, he heard about a Jewish woman named Sarah, who had been married seven times, but her husbands were killed by the demon Asmodeus before the marriage was consummated. Tobias decided to help Sara marry her son, Tobias Jr., and together they faced the demon Asmodeus and defeated him with the help of the angel Raphael.

This story shows the importance of seeking divine justice against the oppressors and enemies of God. Tobias faced the false accusation against him and fought the demon Asmodeus to secure Sarah’s marriage and the continuation of the lineage of Israel. His faithfulness and trust in God led him to victory and divine justice.

Tobias’s story also shows that divine justice is often achieved through prayer and trust in God. Tobias cried out to God for justice when he was wrongfully condemned to death, and his prayer was heard. God sent the angel Raphael to help him in his quest for justice and to ensure his protection.

In summary, the story of Tobias teaches us the importance of seeking divine justice against God’s oppressors and enemies, and the importance of prayer and trust in God to achieve it. Tobias’s story also reminds us that God is always present in our lives, and that we can count on Him in every moment of our lives.
