What is the message of Abdias 1:11 about Edom’s injustice and oppression of the weak?

Abdias 1:11 is an Old Testament prophetic book that contains God’s message to the people of Edom. The passage in question speaks about the injustice that Edom inflicted on the children of Israel when they were invaded and plundered by their enemies. In his message, God warns Edom of the judgment that would come upon them because of their oppression of the weak.

Edom was known for its hostility towards the Israelites and its refusal to help them in their time of need. Instead, they took advantage of Israel’s weakness to steal its riches and boast about their victory. But God was not indifferent to the oppression of his people. In Abdias 1:11, He warns Edom, “In the day that You stood aside, in the day that strangers took your host captive, and strangers entered your gates, and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.”

God is saying that instead of helping Israel, Edom stood by and watched as Israel’s enemies plundered them and took them captive. Edom rejoiced over Israel’s misfortune and even helped Israel’s enemies to conquer their possessions. Because of this attitude, God promised that Edom would be judged for its unrighteous actions.

The message of Abdias 1:11 is relevant for us today. God calls us to care for the weak and oppressed around us rather than taking advantage of their vulnerability. This includes the poor, orphans, widows and all those who are marginalized and oppressed. God cares about social justice and expects those who follow him to care as well. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” This means that when we help those who are weak and oppressed, we are serving Jesus.

In summary, Abdias 1:11 teaches us about the importance of caring for the weak and oppressed around us and warns us about the consequences of oppression and injustice. We should follow Jesus’ example and work to reach out to those in need and promote justice in our world.
