What is the role of the law in the Old Testament, according to Galatians 3:10-14?

Galatians 3:10-14 explains the role of the law in the Old Testament. The law was given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai to establish a covenant between God and the people of Israel. The law contains commandments and statutes that God gave the people of Israel to follow and obey. However, according to Paul in Galatians 3:10, the law cannot justify a person before God, but only brings a curse, as no one can completely fulfill all the laws.

Paul uses Scripture in Deuteronomy 27:26 to support his claim, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do all things written in the book of the law.” No one can keep all of God’s laws, and those who try to justify themselves by obeying the law are doomed to a life of futility and failure. The law points to sin and points to the need for a Savior, but it cannot save a person.

However, the role of the law is not insignificant. Paul states in Galatians 3:24 that “the law was our tutor until Christ, that we might be justified by faith”. The law points to Christ and leads us to him, which is the only way we can be justified before God. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we are justified and given the promise of the Holy Spirit. As Paul states in Galatians 3:14, “that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit by faith.”

In summary, the law in the Old Testament plays an important role in pointing to the need for a Savior and leading people to Christ. Although the law cannot save a person, it is still an important part of God’s salvation story and must be understood in light of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
