Adultery

– Included in the Decalogue, it is also addressed in other OT books and condemned in the NT:

Ex 20,14 : You shall not commit adultery.

Leviticus 18:20 : Thou shalt not sleep with thy neighbor’s wife, defiling thyself with her.

Leviticus 20:10 : If a man commits adultery with a married woman.

Num 5,12-30 : If a woman turns away from her husband and is unfaithful to him.

Deut 22:22 : If a man is found sleeping with a married woman, both must die.

Mt 14:4 : John had said to him: “It is not lawful for you to take her as a wife!”.

Jn 8,3-11 : The scribes and the Pharisees brought to him a woman who had been caught in adultery.

1Cor 6,9 : Do you not know that the unrighteous will not possess the kingdom of God? […] nor adulterers.

Heb 13:4 : God will judge the impure and adulterers.

– It is often used as a figure of Israel’s infidelity towards God, when it allowed itself to be seduced by the worship of idols:

Is 57,1-12 : And you, draw near, you sons of the sorceress, offspring of the adulterous and whoring woman!

Jr 3,1-5 : And you, after having sinned with countless lovers, will you return to me?

Jer 13,21-27 : Your adulteries […] and your infamous lust on the hills and in the fields, all these abominations, I have seen them.

Hos 1,2–3,5 : He loves again a woman who was loved by his friend, and who was an adulteress.
