Book of the life

– For the Jewish mentality, God was pleased from the height of heaven to take detailed note of what human beings did for good or evil. In several passages of different books one can find signs of this belief:

Exodus 32:33 : The Lord said to Moses: “The one who has sinned against me, I will erase from my book”.

Ps 39 :8: Then I said: “Behold, I come. In the roll of the book it is written of me.”

Ps 55,9 : You gathered my tears in your canteen; is not everything written in your book?

Ps 68:29 : Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and let their names not be written among the righteous.

Ps 86 :6 : The Lord will then inscribe in the register of the peoples: “He was also born in Zion”.

Psalm 138 :16 : Your eyes have seen every one of my deeds, and they have all been written in your book.

Is 29:11 : The revelation of all these events remains for you like the text of a sealed book.

Jr 36,2-3 : Take a roll of a book and write in it all the oracles I dictated to you.

Br 4,1 : She is the book of the divine commandments and the Law that subsists forever and ever.

Ez 2,9 : I looked and saw a hand advancing towards me, which held a scrolled manuscript.

Ez 3,1 : “Son of Man”, he told me, “eat the roll that is here, and then go and speak to the house of Israel”.

Dan 7:10 : Thousands […] served him, tens of thousands assisted him! The court heard and the books were opened.

Dan 10:21 : But (before) I will make known to you what is written in the book of truth.

Dn 12,1 : Then, among the children of your people, all those who are found written in the book will be saved.

Mal 3,16 : But the Lord listened carefully: before him was written the book that preserves the memory of those who fear the Lord.

Rev 5:1 : In the right hand of him who sat on the throne, a book written on the inside and on the outside, sealed with seven seals.

– Another Jewish thought is revealed in this expression to designate those who were enrolled for salvation:

Dn 12,1 : Then, among the children of your people, all those who are found written in the book will be saved.

Psalm 78:6 : Rather, pour out your wrath on the nations that do not know you, and on the kingdoms that do not call on your name.

Lk 10:20 : But rejoice because your names are written in heaven.

Phil 4:3 : They worked with me in the Gospel, […] whose names are written in the book of life.

Rev 3 :5 : I will never erase his name from the book of life, and I will proclaim him before my Father and his angels.

Rev 13 :8 : All the inhabitants of the earth, whose names are not written from the beginning of the world in the book of life.

Rev 17:8 : The inhabitants of the earth will be amazed, whose names are not written in the book of life.

Rev 20:12 : Books were opened, and another book, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged.

Rev 21:27 : Nothing profane will enter it, nor anyone who practices abominations and lies.
