Exorcism

– Derives from the Greek verb eksorkízo , to swear, to demand an oath. In the NT it has the sense of making one swear in the name of God. In passages of the Gospel in which Christ intervenes and delegates power to the disciples, the terms are used: expel, threaten, subpoena, leave, order, expel, be free, give power, heal:

Mt 8,28-32 : The demons implored Jesus: “If you cast us out, send us to that herd of pigs”.

Mt 10 : Heal the sick, […] purify lepers, cast out demons. You received for free, give for free!

Mt 12:22 : Then they presented him with a blind and mute possessed man. Jesus healed him in such a way that he spoke and saw.

Mk 1:34 : He healed many who were oppressed with various diseases, and cast out many demons.

– In the OT the presence of the devil was linked to diseases:

1Sm 16:23 : David took the harp and played. Saul calmed down, felt relieved, and the evil spirit left him.

Tb 6,8 : If you place a piece of the heart on coals, its smoke will drive out every kind of evil spirit.
