– From Aramaic mexiha , anointed. Christ comes from the Greek and also means anointed. Jesus is the Father’s quintessential Christ for the mission of becoming incarnate, taking on a body like us and saving us:
Mt 2,6 : Land of Judah […] from you will come the leader who will rule Israel, my people.
Mt 11,2-3 : Having John, in his prison, heard of the works of Christ.
Mk 14,61-62 : The high priest asked him again: “Are you the Christ, the Son of the blessed God?”.
Lc 2,11 : Today in the City of David a Savior has been born to you, who is Christ the Lord.
Jo 1,41 : So he immediately went looking for his brother and said to him: “We have found the Messiah (which means the Christ)”.
Jn 4,25-26 : The woman replied: “I know that the Messiah (who is called Christ) must come”.
Jn 20:31 : But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.
– Kings, priests, and sometimes prophets were anointed in the name of God for their mission:
Ex 29,7 : You will take the anointing oil and anoint it, pouring it on the head.
Leviticus 8:12 : He poured the anointing oil on Aaron’s head to consecrate him.
1Sm 9,16 : Tomorrow at this time, I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin and you will anoint him to be head […] of Israel.
1Sm 10,1 : Samuel took a small bottle of oil and poured it on Saul’s head.
1Sm 16,1.12-13 : How long will you mourn Saul, having rejected him from the royalty of Israel? Fill your horn with oil.
1 Kings 1:39 : Sadoc the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon with it.
1 Kings 19:16 : Jehu, son of Namsi, as king of Israel and Elisha, son of Saphat, of Abel-meula, as prophet in your place.
