Obedience

– Acceptance of the Word and will of God:

Gen 2:16 : He gave him this precept: You may eat the fruit of every tree in the garden.

Gen 26:5: Because Abraham obeyed my voice and observed my statutes, my commandments and my laws.

Ex 5:2 : Pharaoh replied: “Who is this Lord, that I should obey him in letting Israel go?”.

Deut 4:30 : When all these evils have fallen on you, […] you will return to the Lord your God and listen to his voice.

Deut 15:5 : As long as you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, carefully putting his commandments into practice.

Deut 26:17 : Today you made the Lord your God promise that he would be your God […] by faithfully obeying him.

Joshua 24:24 : We will serve the Lord our God –, the people answered Joshua – and we will obey his voice.

– One must obey God rather than men:

1Mc 2,15-26 : Envoys from the king came to Modin to impose the apostasy and oblige sacrifices.

2Mk 7 : Seven brothers were arrested one day with their mother, and the king […] wanted to coerce them to eat the forbidden pork meat.

Dan 3:16 : They replied to King Nebuchadnezzar: “It is useless to answer you about this”.

Acts 4,18-20 : They called them and ordered them absolutely not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.

Acts 5:29 : Peter and the apostles replied: It is important to obey God rather than men.

– Obey constituted authorities; Jesus gave us the example:

Lc 2,49 : Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?

Jn 4:34 : Jesus said to them: “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work”.

Jo 5,30 : My judgment is fair, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

John 6:38 : For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

Rom 5:19 : Just as by one man’s disobedience all were made sinners.

Phil 2,8-9 : He humbled himself even more, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Heb 5,8-9 : Although he was the Son of God, he learned obedience through the sufferings he had.

– Reward for obedience and punishment for disobedience:

Ex 26 : You shall not place in your land any stone adorned with figures, […] for I am the Lord your God.

Pr 30:17 : The eyes of one who mocks his father, who refuses to obey his mother: the ravens of the torrent will snatch him away.

Eph 6,1-3 : Children, obey your parents according to the Lord; because this is fair.

– Obedience regulates relations between authority and people:

Mt 17,24-26 : They approached Peter and asked him: “Does your teacher not pay the didrachma?”.

Mt 22:21 : Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.”

Mk 12:17 : Jesus then replied to them: “Render therefore to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s”.

Lk 20:25 : Then he said to them, “Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s”.

Rm 13,1-2 : Everyone must be subject to the constituted authorities, because there is no authority that does not come from God.

– Between children and parents:

Deut 21:18 : If a man has an indocile and rebellious son, let him not obey the orders of his father or his mother.

– Between master and slave, priests and faithful, prophets and listeners:

– To Jesus obey the winds, the sea:

Mt 8,27 : Admired, they said: “Who is this man whom even the winds and the sea obey?”.

Mk 4:41 : Who is this, whom even the wind and the sea obey?

Lc 8,25 : Who is this, whom the winds and the sea obey?

– And also unclean spirits:

Mc 1,27 : A new teaching, and given with authority; moreover, he commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him!

Lk 4,36 : What does this mean? Send with power and authority to unclean spirits, and they come out?

– Jesus, model of obedience to the Father:

Lk 2,48-49 : My son, what have you done to us?! Behold, your father and I were looking for you, full of distress.

Rom 5:19 : Just as by one man’s disobedience all were made sinners.

– A Christian must not obey sin:

Rom 6:12-13 : Therefore, let not sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its appetites.

– And rather obey the faith:

Rom 1 :5 : We have received grace and apostolate, in order to lead, in his name, all pagan nations to the obedience of faith.

Rom 16:26 : Through the prophetic Scriptures, made known to all nations, in order to lead them to the obedience of faith.

– Obey Christ:

2Cor 10,5 : We captivate every thought and reduce it to obedience to Christ.

– Obey the Good News, the Gospel:

Rm 10,16 : But not everyone has listened to the Good News.
