Pilgrimage

– Comes from the Latin peregrinatio , long journey to a foreign country; in religious terms, however, it means the journey to holy places or places of worship. Male Israelites were to present themselves to the Lord three times a year:

Ex 23, 17 : Three times a year, every male individual will present himself before the Lord.

– On the Feast of Unleavened Bread, or Passover:

Ex 23,15 : You shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread: for seven days, in the month of the ears.

Deut 16:1 : In the month of the ears, take care to celebrate the Passover in honor of the Lord.

– On the Feast of the Harvest, also called Weeks or Pentecost:

Ex 23,16 : Then there will be the feast of the Harvest, of the firstfruits of your work.

Deut 16:9-10 : Then you shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks in honor of the Lord your God.

– And on the Feast of Ingathering or Tabernacles:

Ex 23,16 : Then there will be the feast of the Harvest, of the firstfruits of your work.

Deut 16:13 : You will celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days, when you have collected the produce.

– There were psalms and songs sung by pilgrims in search of Jerusalem. These are the so-called chants of ascents or graduals (from the Latin gradus passo , to walk, march):

Ps 120–134 : I lift up my eyes to the mountains […] My help will come from […], creator of heaven and earth.

– Jesus went with his parents every year to Jerusalem:

Jn 13,1-30 : Before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father.
