Reconciliation

– It was the maximum and definitive act by which Jesus Christ, dying on the cross, renewed the Covenant between humanity and the Father:

Rom 5:9-10 : If, while we were still enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son.

Rom 8,3-4,19-21 : What was impossible for the Law, since the flesh made it impotent, God did.

Rom 9:30 : So what shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, obtained justification, which comes from faith.

Rom 10 :4: For Christ is the end of the Law, to justify everyone who believes.

2Cor 5,17-21 : This comes from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and entrusted us with the ministry of this reconciliation.

Gal 3:13 : Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, becoming a curse for us.

Gal 6:15 : Because circumcision and uncircumcision are worthless, but the new creation.

Eph 2,11-22 : Remember therefore […] that you are called uncircumcised by those who claim to be circumcised.

Col 1,20-21 : And through him to reconcile all creatures to himself.

1Th 1:10 : And wait for his Son from heaven, whom God raised from the dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.

1Tm 2,5 : For there is only one God and there is only one mediator between God and men: Jesus Christ.

1Pt 2:24 : He bore our sins in his body on the tree.

– And taught his disciples reconciliation and forgiveness:

Mt 5,25-26 : Come to an agreement without delay with your adversary, while you are on the way with him.

Mt 18:15 : If your brother has sinned against you, go and rebuke him between you and him alone.

Lk 12,58-59 : When you go with your opponent to the magistrate, do your best to come to an agreement with him.

Rom 12:19 : Dearly beloved, do not take revenge on one another, but allow the wrath of God to act.

– In the OT there was a concern for justice:

Ex 21,30-37 : If, in order to redeem his life, an acquittal is imposed on him, he must give the full price.

Ex 22,4-14 : If a man causes damage in a field […] he will make up for the damage with the best of his field and his vineyard.

Leviticus 5:21-22 : If anyone sins and commits unfaithfulness against the Lord.

Leviticus 24:19-20 : If a man strikes his neighbor as he did, so shall it be done to him.

– With the elimination of hate:

Ex 23,4-5 : If you find your enemy’s ox or his donkey straying, bring them back to him.

Leviticus 19:17-18 : You shall not hate your brother in your heart.

Eclo 10,6 : Do not remember any injustice caused by your neighbor.

Eclo 27,30 : The criminal design turns against its author, who will not know where the evil comes from.

Eclo 28,1-2 : He who wants revenge will suffer the Lord’s vengeance.

– Sacrifices were offered by the priests to atone for the offense committed:

Leviticus 5:25-26 : He shall bring a ram without blemish to the priest for the sacrifice of reparation to the Lord.

– Because the mercy of God is infinite:

Ex 34,6 : Lord, Lord, God compassionate and merciful, slow to anger, rich in goodness and faithfulness.

Jr 3,12 : Go, lean towards the north and say with a loud voice: Return, Israel.

Ps 84 : 4 : You have appeased all your anger, you have held back your fierce anger.

Ps 102,8-9 : The Lord is good and merciful, slow to anger and full of mercy.

– And only by his grace can man be reconciled to him:

Ex 32,30 : You have committed a great sin. But I will go up to the Lord today; maybe get your guilt forgiven.

Deut 21 : O Lord, forgive your people Israel whom you redeemed.

Ps 102,8-9 : The Lord is good and merciful, slow to anger and full of mercy.

Is 37,15-20 : O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, you who sit on the cherubim.

Is 44:22 : I made your iniquities disappear like a cloud, and your sins like a mist.

Is 49,14-15 : Zion said: “The Lord has abandoned me, the Lord has forgotten me”.

Jer 33 :8 : I will cleanse them of all the sins they have committed against me, and I will forgive them.

Jer 50:20 : And also the sin of Judah, but they will not find it, for I will forgive the rest that I have spared.

Ez 36,24-25 : I will withdraw you from the midst of the nations, I will gather you from everywhere, and I will lead you to your soil.

Mic 7,18 : What is the God who, like you, blots out iniquity and forgives the sin of the rest of his people?
