Sin

– In the AT, sin is considered more under the aspect of external action, as an attack on the order established by God, especially in relation to the covenant; while the NT predominantly insists on the aspect of moral judgment and the internal responsibility of those who sin: in Adam all sinned (original sin):

Rom 3:23 : Indeed, all have sinned and all fall short of the glory of God.

Rom 5:12-21 : Therefore, as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin.

– The various terms used in the Bible to indicate sin refer to the failure of an objective, the deviation of a project, the total perdition of man, disobedience to God:

Gen 3:1-2 : Is it true that God has forbidden you to eat the fruit of every tree in the garden?

– Fleeing occasions of sin:

Eclo 21,2 : Flee from sin as one flees from a serpent.

Eclo 26,28 : It will be difficult for the one who negotiates to avoid mistakes, and the tavern keeper will not escape the sin of the tongue.

Eclo 28,10 : Avoid quarrels and you will reduce sins.

Mt 5,29-30 : If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you.

Mt 18,8s : Therefore, if your hand or your foot causes you to fall into sin, cut them off and throw them away from you.

– Sin is an offense against a loving God:

Is 41,8-9 : Jacob I chose, offspring of Abraham, my friend. You are my servant, I chose you, and I did not reject you.

Is 44,21-22 : I have made your iniquities disappear like a cloud, and your sins like a mist.

Is 49,15 : Can a woman forget the one who suckles? […] if she forgot him, I would never forget you.

Is 64,7 : There is no one to invoke your name […] and you let us go to our sins.

– Must be avoided:

Ps 4,5 : Tremble, but without sinning; reflect in your hearts, when you are in your beds, and be silent.

Ps 33:14 : Guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from deceitful words.

Ps 38 : 2 : I will watch over my actions, so that I will not sin with my tongue anymore.

Ps 96:10 : The Lord loves those who hate evil, he watches over the souls of his servants and delivers them from the hands of the wicked.

Pr 8:13 : The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride, arrogance, a perverse way, a lying mouth: this is what I hate.

Amos 5:15 : Hate evil, love good, make justice reign in your assemblies.

Jn 3,1-10 : Go to Nineveh, the great city, and make known to it the message that I commanded you.

Jo 5,14 : Behold, you have been healed; sin no more, lest a worse thing happen to you.

Jn 8:11 : She replied: “No one, Lord”. Then Jesus said to him, “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.”

Rom 6:11-12 : Therefore, consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Rom 12:9: Let your charity not be faked. Abhor evil, cling solidly to good.

Eph 4,26-27 : Even in anger, do not sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your resentment.

Col 3 :5 : Mortify therefore your members in what is earthly: lewdness, impurity.

1Th 5:22 : Beware of all kinds of evil.

2Tm 2,19 : Renounce iniquity all who pronounce the name of the Lord.

Heb 12 :1 : Surrounded as we are by such a cloud of witnesses, let us free ourselves from the chains of sin.

1Pt 2: 1: Cast away therefore all malice, all craftiness, pretense, envy, and every kind of slander.

– The sinner is detested, abandoned by God:

Ps 5,5-7 : For you are not a God to whom evil pleases, the evil one could not dwell with you.

Pr 15 :9 : The Lord abhors the way of evil, but loves what is tied to justice.

Wis 14:9: Indeed, God hates both the wicked and his wickedness.

Mt 7,23 : And yet I will say to them: I never knew you. Get away from me, you evil workers!

– And is punished by God:

Ex 23,21 : And listen to what he tells you. Do not resist him, for he would not forgive your fault.

Leviticus 20:20 : If a man lies with his aunt, […] they will bear their iniquity and die childless.

Josh 24:19 : You will not be able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God, a jealous God who will not forgive your rebellions.

Ps 74:11 : I will bring down all the powers of the wicked, while the power of the righteous will be exalted.

Ps 88,31-33 : If, however, your children abandon my Law, […] I will punish their transgression with a rod.

Pr 22:8 : He who sows evil reaps torment: the rod of his anger will smite him.

Ezekiel 18:4: It is to me that lives belong, the life of the father and the life of the son. Why, it is the culprit who will die.

Dn 9,11 : The curse and the imprecation that appear in the Law of Moses, […] fell on us, because we sinned against him.

Revelation 21:8 : The lukewarm, the infidels, […] will have as their lot the pool burning with fire and brimstone, the second death.

– And the consequences of sin are death:

Gen 2:17 : Do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt die.

Gen 3:19 : Until you return to the land from which you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

Ps 89,3 : You reduce man to dust, and say: “Children of men, return to dust”.

Ecclesiastes 3:20 : All are going to the same place. All come out of dust and to dust they return.

Eccl 12.7 : Before the dust returns to the earth to become what it was; and before the breath of life returns to God.

– Curse of the Ground:

– Fear of God:

Gen 3,8-9 : The man and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God.

– Corruption of human nature:

Gen 6 :5 : The Lord saw that the wickedness of men was great in the earth.

Gen 8:21 : I will no longer curse the ground because of man – because the thoughts of his heart are evil.

Romans 1:18-32 : The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and perversity.

– Short and hectic life:

Job 14,1-2 : A man born of a woman lives for a short time and is full of miseries.

Eccl 6:12 : For who can know what is good for man in life, during the days of his vain existence?

Wis 2,1 : Short is our life, and full of sorrows; for death there is no remedy.

Eclo 40,1-10 : A great restlessness has been imposed on all men, and a heavy yoke weighs down the children of Adam.

Eclo 41,1-2 : O death, how bitter your memory is for the man who lives in peace in the midst of his goods.

Is 40,6-7 : “Cry out!” – said a voice – I replied: “What shall I cry? Every creature is like grass.”

Jas 1,10-11 : The rich, on the contrary, from their humiliation, because they will pass away like the flower of the field.

– Submitted to the judgment of God:

Rom 2:16 : This will clearly appear on the day when, according to my Gospel, God will judge the secret actions of men.

– Exclusion from your Kingdom:

Gal 5,19-21a : The works of the flesh are these: fornication, impurity […] those who practice them will not inherit the Kingdom of God!

Eph 5 :5 : No dissolute, or impure, or covetous – true idolaters! – will have an inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ.

– Inner bondage:

John 8:34 : Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who gives himself over to sin is his slave.

– All men are sinners and are subject to sin:

1 Kings 8:46 : When they sin against you – because there is no man who does not sin.

2Ch 6,36 : When they have sinned against you – for there is no man without sin.

Job 14:4 : Who will make the clean out of the unclean? Nobody!

Job 15:14 : What is man that he should be pure? Can what is born of a woman be just?

Job 25 :4: Would man be righteous before God? Is he who is born of a woman pure?

Ps 13:3 : But they all went astray and perverted; there is no one else who does good.

Ps 50,7 : Behold, I was born in guilt, my mother conceived me in sin.

Pr 20,9 : Who can say: “My heart is pure, I am clean from sin?”.

Ecclesiastes 7:20 : There is no righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

Jn 8:7 : Whoever of you is without sin, be the first to throw a stone at him.

Rom 1,18–3,20.23 : The wrath of God is manifested from the height of heaven against all the ungodliness and perversity of men.

Jas 3,2 : Because we all fall at many points.

1Jn 1,8-9 : If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1Jn 2,1-2 : This I write to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone sins, we have an intercessor with the Father.

– The NT sometimes mentions sin in a broad sense, as a negative power that exists and is active in the world:

Jo 8,21 : I go away, and you will seek me and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot go.

Jn 16,8-9 : And when he comes, he will convince the world about sin, righteousness and judgment.

Rom 7:14-23 : We know, in fact, that the Law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

– Other times it refers to specific acts – sin against the truth:

Jo 8,40.45-46 : But now you seek to take my life, I who told you the truth that I heard from God!

– Against the Holy Spirit:

Mt 12,31-32 : Every sin and every blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not.

Mk 3,28-29 : All sins will be forgiven the sons of men, even their blasphemies.

Luke 12:10 : But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not receive forgiveness.

Heb 6,4-6 : Those who were once enlightened tasted the heavenly gift, they partook of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Heb 10:26 : After we have received and known the truth […] there will no longer be a sacrifice to atone for this sin.

– Against the brothers:

Rm 14,13.15.20 : Let us therefore stop judging one another; […] take care not to put a stumbling block before your brother.

1Cor 8,9-10 : Beware, however: that this freedom of yours does not become an occasion for the fall of the weak.

– No one can purify himself:

Job 9,29-30 : I am sure to be condemned! What is the use of tiring myself in vain?

Ps 48 :8 : But no man can save himself, nor pay his ransom to God.

Pr 20,9 : Who can say: “My heart is pure, I am clean from sin?”.

Jr 2,22 : Even if you washed yourself with potash, and used a lot of soap, your sin would continue to stain you.

Rom 7:14-23 : We know, in fact, that the Law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

– Only God can:

Ps 50,9.12 : Sprinkle myself with a branch of hyssop and I will be clean. Wash me and I will become whiter than snow.

Is 1,18 : If your sins are scarlet, they will become white as snow!

– In Christ Jesus, cancel sins:

Mt 1:21 : She will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.

Jn 1:29 : Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

Acts 4:12 : There is salvation in no one else, for no other name under heaven has been given to men.

Eph 1 :7: Through his blood we have Redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Col 1:14 : In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

1Jn 1 :7 : And the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

Is 53,5 : The punishment that saves us weighed on him; we were healed thanks to his wounds.

– Jesus proclaims and realizes the kingdom of God, defeating sin:

Mt 4,23 : Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom.

Mt 9:13 : I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Mt 10,1.7 : Jesus gathered his twelve disciples. He gave them the power to cast out unclean spirits.

Mt 11,4-5 : Go and tell John what you have heard and what you have seen: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed.

Mt 26:28 : This is my blood, the blood of the New Covenant, shed for many men in remission of sins.

Mk 2,17 : The healthy do not need a doctor, but the sick do; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Lk 5:32 : I did not come to call the righteous to conversion, but sinners.

Lk 19,9-10 : Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.

– Through his blood:

Mt 20,28 : Just as the Son of Man came, not to be served, but to serve and to give his life.

Mt 26:28 : This is my blood, the blood of the New Covenant, shed for many men in remission of sins.

Rom 8,3-4 : God made it. By sending, on account of sin, his own Son in flesh like that of sin.

– He became sin for our deliverance:

Romans 4:25 : Who was delivered for our sins and was raised for our justification.

1Cor 15,3 : That Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures.

2Cor 5:21 : God made him to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.

Gal 1 :4: Who gave himself for our sins, to free us from the perversity of the present world.

1Jn 2:2 : He is the atonement for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

– In Him we have redemption and forgiveness of sins:

Eph 1 :7: Through his blood we have Redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Col 1:14 : In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

– In Baptism we participate in his victory over sin:

Rom 6:1-14 : Or do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

– Sin must be confessed:

Job 33:27 : I sinned, I violated the law, but God did not treat me according to my mistakes.

Ps 31 :5: Then I confessed my sin to you, and I no longer concealed my guilt.

Ps 50,5-6 : I acknowledge my iniquity, my sin is always before me.

Pr 28:15 : A roaring lion, a hungry bear: such is the wicked who rules over a poor people.

Is 59:12 : For our faults are many before you, and our sins bear witness against us.

Is 64,4-5 : No ear has heard, no eye has seen another god save those who count on him.

Lm 3,40-41 : Let us examine, let us scrutinize our conduct, and let us return to the Lord.

Br 1,15–3,8 : The Lord our God is righteous. We, however, must, today, blush with shame.

Dan 3,25-43 : Be blessed and praised, Lord, God of our fathers! May your name be glorious for centuries!

Dan 9,4-19 : I pleaded with the Lord my God and made my confession to him.

1Jn 1,8-10 : If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves.

– And there is joy in heaven for every sinner who returns to God:

Mt 18,13-14 : And if he finds it, he rejoices more than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.

Lc 15,7.10.32 : Thus there will be greater joy in heaven over a single sinner who does penance.

– God is merciful to the repentant sinner:

2 Sam 12:13 : “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan answered him, “The Lord forgives your sin; thou shalt not die.”

Eclo 17,21-28 : Convert to the Lord, abandon your sins.

Is 1,16ss : Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean. Remove your evil deeds from before my eyes.
