– It was King David who designed the temple of Jerusalem:
2Sm 7,1-2 : Now, when King David had just settled in his residence and the Lord had given him peace.
– But it was Solomon, his son, who built it:
1 Kings 5:27-28 : King Solomon chose thirty thousand workers throughout Israel.
1 Kings 6: Solomon, in the fourth year of his reign, […] undertook the building of the Temple of the Lord.
2Ch 3 : Solomon began to build the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, on Mount Moriah.
Wis 9:8 : You commanded me to build a temple on your holy mountain and an altar in the city where you live.
– From there the Jews had to go up to Jerusalem to offer their sacrifices, because there was the house of God:
1Kings 5:19 : Therefore I am thinking of building a temple in the name of the Lord my God.
1 Kings 8:20 : I sat on the throne of Israel, succeeding my father David, and I built this temple to the name of the Lord.
2Ch 6,1-2 : The Lord wants to dwell in darkness. Build, therefore, a house that will be your eternal home.
Ps 9,12 : Sing to the Lord, who dwells in Zion; proclaim his high deeds among the peoples.
Psalm 134 : 21: Blessed be the Lord from Zion, who dwells in Jerusalem.
Jr 8,19 : Is the Lord no longer in Zion? And his king no longer lives in it?
Jn 2:16 : Get this out of here and do not make my Father’s house a house of merchants.
1Tm 3,15 : I want you to know how you ought to behave in the house of God, which is the Church of the living God.

1 Kings 8:29 : May your eyes be open day and night on this temple, on this place.
1Kings 9,3 : I have heard your prayer and your supplication to me; I consecrated this house that you built for me.
Is 56,7 : I will lead them to my holy mountain and fill them with joy in my house of prayer.
Mt 21:13 : My house is a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.
Mark 11:17 : Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations?
Lk 19:46 : My house is a house of prayer! But you have made it a den of thieves.
– God abandoned him because of the sins of the people:
Jr 7,12-13 : Go, therefore, to my house in Shiloh, where my name dwelt at first, and see what I have done to it.
Ez 10:18 : Suddenly, the glory of the Lord left the threshold of the temple and rested on the cherubim.
Ez 11,22-23 : The cherubim unfolded their wings, […] while the glory of the God of Israel rested upon them.
– But the glory of the Lord returned after the renewal:
Ez 43: 1-7 : I was then led to the east porch, and, behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming.
– After the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BC (or 586), the temple was destroyed and the people deported:
2Ch 36,17-21 : Against them the king of the Chaldeans who, in the very building of the sanctuary, had their young men killed.
– In 520-515 BC, during the Persian period, the second temple was built by Zerubbabel (520-515 BC):
Es 3,7–4,4 : Stonemasons and carpenters were then hired.
Es 5,1-2 : Zerubbabel […] and Joshua […] resumed rebuilding the Temple of God in Jerusalem.

– After the devastation of Antiochus Epiphanes, it was purified by Judas Maccabeus and consecrated:
1Mk 4,49 : They made new sacred vessels and brought the lampstand, the altar of incense and the table into the sanctuary.
– In 63 BC, the Romans conquered Jerusalem. In 37 BC, Herod took Jerusalem and began rebuilding it. It is of him that Jesus speaks in:
Jn 2,18-22 : Jesus answered them: “I destroyed this temple, and I will rebuild it in three days”.
– In 70 AD, the Romans set fire to it, leaving no stone unturned, as Jesus prophesied:
Mt 24,1-2 : Upon leaving the temple, the disciples approached Jesus and made him appreciate the constructions.
Mk 13,1-2 : Jesus replied to him: “Do you see this great building? Not one stone will be left upon another that will not be demolished.”
Luke 19:44 : They will destroy you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you.
Lc 21,5-6 : How they called his attention to the construction of the temple made of beautiful stones.
Jn 11:48 : All will believe in him, and the Romans will come and ruin our city and the whole nation.
– Jesus was presented to the Lord in the temple:
Lk 2,22-23 : When the days of his purification were over […] they took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.
– At the age of 12, he was found there by Maria and José:
Lc 2,46 : Three days later they found him in the temple, sitting among the doctors, listening to them and questioning them.
– Later, in public life, he taught:
Lk 19:47 : Every day he taught in the temple.
Lc 21,37 : During the day, Jesus taught in the temple and, in the afternoon, he left to spend the night on the Mount called Olives.
Lc 22,53 : Meanwhile, I was with you every day in the temple.
Jn 8 :2 : At daybreak, he returned to the temple and all the people came to him.
Jn 18:20 : Jesus answered him: “I have spoken publicly to the world. I taught in the synagogue and in the temple.”
– From him drove out the vendors:
Mt 21,12-13 : Jesus entered the temple and expelled all those who were involved in trade.
Mk 11:15-17 : Jesus entered the temple. And he began to drive out those who were buying and selling in the temple.
Lk 19,45-46 : He then entered the temple and began to drive out the merchants.
Jo 2,14-15 : He found in the temple the dealers of oxen, sheep and doves, and tables of the changers of coins.
– Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that the time has come to worship God in spirit and truth, and no longer in Jerusalem:
Jn 4,21-26 : Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will not worship the Father, either on this mountain or in Jerusalem.
– The disciples teach that the temple of God are Christians:
Rom 8:11 : If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you.
1Cor 3,9.16-17 : We are workers with God. Ye, God’s field, God’s building.
1Cor 6,19 : Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who dwells in you.
2Cor 6,16 : Because we are the Temple of the living God.
Eph 2:22 : It is in him that you also enter together, by the Spirit, into the structure of the building.
Heb 3 :6 : Christ, however, was like a Son at the head of his own household. And his house is us.
– And the church:
Acts 4:11 : This Jesus, the stone that you builders despised, has become the cornerstone.
1Cor 3,10-11 : According to the grace that God gave me, like a wise architect I laid the foundation, but someone else builds on it.
Eph 2:20 : Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.

– The temple of Jerusalem was a figure of the heavenly temple into which Jesus entered with his own blood:
Heb 8,5 : The worship they celebrate is, moreover, only the image, shadow of heavenly realities.
Heb 9,11-12.24 : And through a more excellent and more perfect tabernacle, not built by human hands.
Rev 11:19 : The temple of God in heaven was opened, and the ark of his testament appeared in his temple.
Rev 14:17 : Another angel came out of the temple of heaven. He also had a sharp sickle.
Revelation 15:5-6 : After this, I saw the temple open in heaven, which contains the Tabernacle of the Testimony.
– To celebrate the heavenly liturgy forever and ever:
Rev 5,6-15 : To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, praise, honor, glory and power for ever and ever.
Rev 7:14-15 : That is why they stand before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple.
Rev 21,3-4 : Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men. He will dwell with them and they will be his people.
Rev 21,22–22,5 : I did not see any temple in it, for the Lord, God Almighty, is its temple.
