Temptation

– In the Bible, trying means, above all, putting to the test. It is in this sense that God tempts human beings, putting them to the test in different ways, in order to verify their deep intentions:

Gen 22,1s : After that, God tested Abraham and said to him: “Abraham!”. “Here I am,” he replied.

Ex 16,4 : I will put him to the test in this way, to see whether or not he will walk according to my orders.

Deut 8 : 2.16 : The way the Lord led you during those forty years in the desert, to humble you and prove you.

Deut 13:3-4 : For the Lord your God is testing you to see whether you love him with all your heart.

2Ch 32,31 : God abandoned him to test and know the core of his heart.

Tob 12:13 : But because you were pleasing to the Lord, temptation had to test you.

Jt 8,25-26 : They were wounded by the Terminator and perished by the serpents.

Job 1,6-12 : One day when the sons of God presented themselves before the Lord, Satan also came among them.

Wis 3,5 : For having suffered a little, they will receive great goods, because God, who tested them.

Eclo 2,5 : It is by fire that gold and silver are tried, and men pleasing to God, by the crucible of humiliation.

Zech 13,9 : I will refine him as silver is refined, I will try him as gold is tried.

Rom 5,3ss : Not only that, but we boast even of tribulations. For we know that tribulation produces patience.

Jas 1,2s : Consider that it is the greatest joy, my brothers, when you pass through various trials.

2Pt 2,9 : It is because the Lord knows how to deliver pious men from trials and reserve the wicked to be punished.

– But he does not allow himself to be tempted beyond his strength:

1Cor 10,13 : No temptation has overtaken you that surpasses human strength.

Mt 6,13 : Then lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Mt 26,41 : Watch and pray so that you do not enter into temptation.

– Man puts God to the test, demanding extraordinary interventions from him:

Ex 17,2 : “Give us water to drink”, they said.

Num 14:22 : None of the men who saw my glory and the wonders I did in Egypt and in the desert, who provoked me.

Deut 6:16 : You shall not provoke the Lord your God, as you tempted him at Massa.

Jt 8,11-13 : Who are you to provoke the Lord?

Ps 94,9 : Where your fathers provoked me and tempted me, despite having seen my works.

Is 7:12 : Ahaz replied: “By no means! I don’t want to put the Lord to the test.”

Acts 5:9 : Peter replied: “Why did you agree to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test?”

Acts 15:10 : Are you now provoking God by imposing a yoke on the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

1Cor 10 : Our fathers were all under the cloud and they all crossed the sea.

– In the sense of a tendency to evil, temptation comes from the devil and concupiscence:

Job 1,8-9 : The Lord said to him: “Have you noticed my servant Job? There is no other like him on earth. He is a blameless and upright man.”

Mt 4,1.3-10 : Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

1Cor 7,5 : And then return to each other again, so that Satan does not tempt you because of your incontinence.

1Cor 10,13 : No temptation has overtaken you that surpasses human strength.

Gal 6,1 : And take care of yourself, so that you also do not fall into temptation!

1Th 3,5 : For I feared that the tempter had seduced you and our work had come to nothing.

Jas 1,2.13-14 : Consider it a supreme joy, my brothers, when you pass through various trials.

Rev 3:10 : Because you have kept the word of my patience, I will also keep you from the hour of trial.

– That man can overcome with the help of God:

Eclo 44,20 : Abraham is the illustrious father of an infinity of peoples. No one was equal to him in glory.

Mt 6,13 : And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Mt 26,41 : Watch and pray so that you do not enter into temptation.

Lc 22,31s : Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded you to sift you like wheat.

Jn 17:11-12 : Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have charged me to make known, so that they may be one like us.

1Cor 10,13 : No temptation has overtaken you that surpasses human strength.

2Cor 3,5 : Not that we are able of ourselves to have any thoughts, as of ourselves.

Phil 4:13 : I can do all things through him who comforts me.

2Th 3,3 : But the Lord is faithful, and he will give you strength and preserve you from evil.

Jas 1,2-3.12 : Consider that it is a great joy, my brothers, when you go through various trials.

1Pt 1,6-7 : Despite the passing afflictions to be caused to you by diverse trials.

1Jn 2,14 : Young people, I wrote to you, because you are strong and the Word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

Ap 2,10 : Do not be afraid of what you will suffer. During these days the devil will cast some of you into prison.

– God does not tempt for evil:

Pr 19 :3 : A man’s folly leads him astray; it is against the Lord that his heart is angry.

Eclo 15,11-12 : Do not say: “It is because of God that I lack her”. For it behooves thee not to do what he abhors.

Jas 1:13 : No one, when tempted, should say: “It is God who tempts me”.

– Jesus himself was put to the test:

Mt 4,3-10 : The tempter approached him and said: “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread”.

Lc 4,1-13 : Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert.

Jn 12:27 : Now my soul is troubled. But what shall I say?… Father, save me from this hour.

Heb 2:18 : Because he himself endured tribulation, he is in a position to come to the aid of those who are afflicted.

Heb 4:15 : On the contrary, he went through the same trials as us, with the exception of sin.

– And invites you to pray not to fall into temptation:

Mt 6,13 : And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Lk 11:4 : For we also forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation.

Lc 22,40 : Pray that you do not fall into temptation.

1Pt 5,6-7 : Trust him with all your worries, because he cares for you.
