Violence

– Like revenge, it was cultivated among the eastern peoples and was also present among the Israelites:

Gen 4,1-8.23-24 : “Let’s go to the field.” As soon as they reached the field, Cain threw himself on his brother and killed him.

Gen 37 : His brothers, seeing that their father preferred him to them, began to hate him and could no longer treat him with good manners.

– Yahweh himself was often invoked as the God of armies:

1Sam 17:45 : David replied: “You come against me with sword, spear and shield”.

1Ch 11,9 : David became more and more powerful and the God of hosts was with him.

1Chr 17:24 : Then your name will be exalted forever. They will say, “The Lord of hosts is the God of Israel.”

Ps 17:35 : Train my hands to fight and my arms to shoot from the bow.

Ps 93,1 : Lord, God of justice, God of vengeance, appear in your splendor.

Is 14,27 : The Lord of hosts has decided, who will change his sentence? His hand is outstretched, who will make him withdraw it?

Hab 2:13 : That the peoples labor for the fire, and the nations toil for nothing?

Zech 2,12 : For this declares the Lord of hosts who sent me […] whoever touches you touches the apple of my eye.

– But the prophets already announced the messianic times of peace:

Is 2,4 : One nation will not lift up the sword against another, and they will no longer drag themselves to war.

Is 11,6-7 : Then the wolf will be the guest of the lamb, the panther will lie down with the kid.

Mq 4,3-4 : One nation will no longer lift up the sword against another, and will no longer train for war.

– Jesus is presented early in his life as a newborn:

Mt 2,11 : Entering the house, they found the child with Mary, his mother.

Lc 2,10-14 : Today in the City of David a Savior has been born to you, who is Christ the Lord.

– Makes a point of being baptized by John the Baptist and is called by him the Lamb of God:

Mt 3,13-17 : Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him.

Mark 1 :9: Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth, from Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Jn 1:29 : The next day, John saw Jesus coming towards him and said: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”.

– Jesus forgives his executioners:

Lk 23:34 : And Jesus said: “Father, forgive them; because they do not know what they are doing”.

1Pt 2,23 : He, outraged, did not repay with identical outrage; […] but he gave himself up to the one who judges justly.

– Sends his disciples on mission like lambs among wolves:

Mt 10,7.16 : Wherever you go, proclaim that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

Lc 6,27-36 : I say to you who hear me: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.

Lc 10,3.7.16 : Go, behold, I send you like lambs among wolves.

Acts 7:60 : Kneeling down, he exclaimed in a loud voice: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them…”.

– As messengers of peace:

Rom 12:18.21 : If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live in peace with all men.

1Th 5:13 : Have a singular love for them, in view of the office they hold. Keep peace among yourselves.

2Tm 2,24 : It is not fitting for a servant of the Lord to quarrel; on the contrary, let him be condescending to all.

Heb 12:14 : Seek peace with everyone and at the same time holiness, without which no one can see the Lord.

– Except when authorities oppose God:

Mt 23,13-23 : Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You close the Kingdom of Heaven to men.

Lk 11,39-48.52 : You clean the outside of the vessel and the dish, but your inside is full of theft and evil!

Jn 19:11 : Jesus replied: “You would have no power over me if it had not been given you from above”.

Gal 2,3-4.11 : Because of false brothers, intruders – Who stealthily introduced themselves among us […], in order to enslave us.

– See PEACE.
