The law of forgiveness: What does the law of forgiveness in Leviticus teach us about God’s mercy and justice? (Leviticus 19:17-18)

The law of forgiveness is one of many laws that God gave the people of Israel to help them live together in a just and loving way. In Leviticus 19:17-18, God says, “Do not harbor hatred against your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so that you do not become guilty of his sin. Do not take revenge and do not hold a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord”.

This law teaches that God’s mercy and justice are linked to forgiveness. God is a God of love and mercy, and He wants His people to reflect that same kindness to one another. God’s justice demands that there be consequences for wrongdoing, but God’s mercy allows for forgiveness and reconciliation.

At the time this law was written, revenge was common practice. If someone harmed another person, the victim or their family would often seek revenge, creating a cycle of violence. But God’s law of forgiveness called His people to break this cycle and instead lovingly rebuke the brother and seek reconciliation.

This law is also applicable today. God calls us to forgive those who offend us and seek reconciliation. Jesus taught in Matthew 6:14-15, “For if you forgive one another’s trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive one another, your heavenly Father will not forgive your trespasses.” Forgiving is an act of obedience to God, and it allows us to experience the peace and freedom that come with reconciliation.
