Job’s story is one of the best known and impactful in the Bible. Job was a rich and righteous man who feared God and shunned evil. However, God allowed Satan to test him, and Job lost everything he had: his family, his possessions, and his health. Job was so shaken that he even cursed the day he was born.
For most of the book, Job and his friends discuss possible reasons for their suffering, trying to find a logical explanation for what happened. But it is only at the end of the book that God reveals himself to Job, answering him directly. God’s answer begins in Job 38:1-11, where he speaks directly to Job:
“Then the Lord answered Job out of the midst of the storm. He said, ‘Who are you to question my wisdom with your ignorance? Dress like a man and prepare for a conversation with me! Where were you when I laid the foundation of earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the measuring line upon it? And what were its bases fixed? Who laid the cornerstone of its foundation, when the morning stars sang together and did all the angels shout for joy?'” (Job 38:1-7)
In this passage, God shows Job his sovereignty and absolute control over all things. He questions Job about his presence during the creation of the world and puts him in his place, reminding him that God’s wisdom and knowledge are far greater than that of any human being.
Furthermore, God reminds Job that He is the creator of the universe and that He upholds and governs all things. We have no control over our lives, and our wisdom is limited. God, on the other hand, knows all things and has a plan for everything that happens, even if we cannot fully understand that plan.
This passage from Job 38:1-11 teaches us that although suffering is difficult and often painful, we must trust in God’s sovereignty and his love for us. We may not fully understand God’s purposes in our suffering, but we can be assured that He is in control and that He is working for our good. Sometimes this can mean that we need to humble ourselves and acknowledge our ignorance, trusting fully in God’s wisdom.
In summary, the passage from Job 38:1-11 shows us that God is sovereign in all things, including suffering. We can trust his wisdom and love, even when things seem difficult and meaningless.
