What can we learn from Edom’s pride described in Abdias 1:3?

Abdias 1:3 says, “The pride of your heart has deceived you, like one who dwells in the clefts of the rocks, in his high dwelling, who says in his heart, Who will bring me down to the ground?”

The story of Edom is a warning against the dangers of self-exaltation and pride. Edom was the name of a nation that descended from Esau, the older brother of Jacob. Esau and Jacob were sons of the patriarch Isaac and grandsons of Abraham. The relationship between the brothers has always been tense, and that tension has been passed on to their nations. The nation of Edom was arrogant and haughty, believing that it was invincible and that nothing could destroy it. They relied on their strength and abilities and did not recognize that their success came from God.

Due to its arrogance, God sent judgments on Edom. Instead of repenting and turning to God, they continued to rely on themselves and their strength. In the end, Edom was destroyed and became a desert. The prophet Abdias wrote about the fall of Edom and the pride that led to its destruction. He used the image of Edom living in “clefts in the rocks” as an example of self-exaltation.

Pride is a dangerous and destructive sin. It blinds people to the truth and leads to selfish and arrogant behavior. In Proverbs 16:18 we read, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” And in James 4:6, it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

So it’s important to recognize that everything we have comes from God, and we shouldn’t rely on our own strength or ability. We must be humble and recognize that we depend on God for everything. The apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility, considering others better than yourselves. Each of you should look out not only for your own interests, but also for the interests of others “.

In summary, the history of Edom teaches us that pride can lead to downfall and destruction. We must be humble and recognize that we depend on God for everything. Self-exaltation can blind us to the truth and lead to selfish and arrogant behavior. Instead, we should seek humility and submission to God’s will.
