What can we learn about the growth of the early church in Jerusalem from Acts 2:41-47?

In chapter 2 of the book of Acts, we find a description of the growth of the early church in Jerusalem shortly after Pentecost. Peter had preached to the assembled crowd, and three thousand people were baptized that day. The text gives us a clear picture of what the community of believers did next. What can we learn from this passage about the growth of the early church in Jerusalem?

First, it is important to note that there was a strong emphasis on fellowship and teaching the Word. Verse 42 tells us that the believers “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers.” They devoted themselves to listening to the apostles’ teachings and sharing their experiences, as well as breaking bread together and praying for one another.

Furthermore, the early church was characterized by the unity of all members. Verses 44 and 45 report that “all those who believed were together and had everything in common. They sold their possessions and goods, distributing the proceeds among all, as anyone had need.” Believers were willing to share their possessions and resources, which created a community of mutual care and solidarity.

Another characteristic of the early church was the regular practice of worship and fellowship. Verse 46 tells us that “they continued daily with one accord in the temple, and broke bread from house to house, and ate their meals with gladness and singleness of heart.” Believers gathered daily in the temple to worship God together and also in private homes to share bread and fellowship.

Finally, the early church had a powerful witness with non-believers. Verse 47 reports that “they praised God and were well-liked by all the people.” The way believers lived their lives and cared about each other caught the attention of those around them and drew many into the community of faith.

We can learn a lot from the description of the growth of the early church in Jerusalem. Fellowship, fellowship, worship, and witness were fundamental aspects of church life then and remain important to us today. We should seek to cultivate these traits in our own faith community and in our personal lives so that we can be a shining light in our world.
