The prophecy of the seventy weeks is one of the most significant and complex prophecies in the Old Testament. It was given to the prophet Daniel by the angel Gabriel and is found in Daniel 9:24-27. This prophecy speaks of the time when the Messiah would come and establish his kingdom on earth.
The prophecy begins with the statement that seventy weeks of years, that is, 490 years, were determined for the people of Israel and for the city of Jerusalem. The period would begin from the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem (v.25). The fulfillment of the prophecy is described in four parts:
- The first seven weeks of years (49 years) describe the period of time needed to rebuild Jerusalem and its temple after the Babylonian captivity. This took place under the leadership of Ezra and Nehemiah.
- The next sixty-two weeks of years (434 years) describe the time from the rebuilding of Jerusalem until the coming of the Messiah.
- The last week of years (7 years) describes the time when the Messiah would be present on earth. During half of this period he would be killed, and during the other half his death would be followed by the end of the sacrificial system due to the establishment of his eternal kingdom.
- The prophecy ends with the destruction of the city of Jerusalem by the Roman army in AD 70
The prophecy of the seventy weeks is one of the most important prophecies in the Bible, as it clearly demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the Messiah that was promised in the Old Testament. The accuracy of the prophecy is a testament to God’s power to control human history and fulfill his promises.
