Anointing

– In religion, the act or effect of anointing, of applying consecrated oil to a person or object during worship. In the AT, kings, high priests, priests, altars and objects of worship were anointed:

1Sm 9,16 : Tomorrow at this time, I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin and you shall anoint him leader of my people.

Dan 9.26 : After these sixty-two weeks, an anointed one will be suppressed, and no one will be in favor of him.

Ex 29,7 : You will take the anointing oil and anoint it, pouring it on the head.

Exodus 29:21 : You shall sprinkle Aaron and his garments, and his sons and their garments as well, […] and with the anointing oil.

Num 7:10 : The princes presented their offering for the dedication of the altar on the day it was anointed.

Gen 28:18 : Jacob took the stone on which his head had rested and set it up as a pillar, pouring oil on it.

Ex 30,23-24 : Choose the most precious spices: five hundred shekels of virgin myrrh, […] and a hin of olive oil.

– The anointing had several purposes: joy, knowledge by the Holy Spirit, after baptism, beautification, healing of diseases and a sign of hospitality:

Ps 44 :8 : You love righteousness and hate evil, therefore the LORD your God has anointed you with the oil of gladness.

1Jo 2,20.27 : You, however, have the anointing of the Holy One and you know all things.

Est 2,12 : During this period they purified themselves for six months with myrrh oil.

Is 1 :6 : From the soles of the feet to the top of the head […]. Everything is a wound […] that has not been […] softened with oil.

Jr 8,21-22 : Will there be no more balm from Gilead? […] Why, then, does the wound of the daughter of a people not heal?

Mk 6:13 : They cast out many demons, anointed many who were sick with oil and cured them.

Lk 10:34 : Going over, he bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them.

Jas 5:14 : Call the priests of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

Ps 22 :5: You prepare a table for me […]. You pour the perfume on my head, and my cup overflows.

Lk 7,46 : You did not anoint my head with oil; but this one, with perfume, anointed my feet.
