2 John 1:4 says, “I rejoiced greatly that I found some of your children walking in the truth, according to the commandment we received from the Father.” This passage highlights the relationship between truth and joy in the life of the Christian. The apostle John rejoices to find some brothers in the faith who are living according to the truth, which is the commandment they received from the Father.
Truth is a central theme in the scriptures, especially in the New Testament. Jesus claimed that he is the truth (John 14:6), and that knowing the truth sets us free (John 8:32). Furthermore, truth is a requirement for true worship, as stated in John 4:23-24: “But the hour is coming, and now is, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, because the Father seek such as worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Truth is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, and it is essential to salvation and the Christian life.
On the other hand, joy is another important virtue mentioned in the Bible. It is one of the characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Joy is a response to salvation and God’s presence in the believer’s life. It does not depend on external circumstances, but is a deep and lasting joy that comes from the certainty of salvation and fellowship with God.
So the relationship between truth and joy is that truth is the basis of lasting joy. When we live according to the truth, we are sure of God’s salvation and presence in our lives. It brings us a deep and lasting joy, which is not shaken by external circumstances. Truth and joy are inseparable in the Christian life. As the psalmist said, “You will make known to me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11).
