What does it mean to submit to God’s discipline, according to Hebrews 12:5-11?

Discipline is a concept that can often be misunderstood. However, according to Hebrews 12:5-11, discipline is a sign of God’s love for us and a way of molding us to be better.

The author of Hebrews begins by explaining that discipline is a sign of love: “and you forget the word of encouragement that he addresses to you as to children: ‘My son, do not despise the discipline of the Lord, nor be hurt by his rebuke , for the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he chastises everyone he accepts as a son’.” (Hebrews 12:5-6)

God disciplines those he loves, like a loving father correcting his children for their own good. While discipline can be painful, it is proof of God’s love for us and should be received with gratitude and humility.

Also, discipline is a way to shape us and make us grow. “But for the moment no discipline seems to be a cause for joy. On the contrary, it is a cause for sadness; but later on it produces the fruit of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11)

Discipline may be hard to bear at the moment, but the end result is spiritual growth and the bearing of the fruits of righteousness and peace. When we accept God’s discipline in our lives, we are allowing him to work in us and make us grow in holiness and love.

In summary, submitting to God’s discipline means acknowledging his love for us and receiving his correction with humility and gratitude, allowing him to shape us to be better. As it is written in Hebrews 12:11: “All discipline, in fact, at the moment does not seem to be a reason for joy, but for sadness. Later, however, it produces the fruit of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”
