Disciple

– Follower who proposes to continue his master’s work.

– In the OT, Elisha’s acceptance of the call of Elijah, whose disciple he became and whom he later succeeded, is classic. The book of Proverbs speaks of the wisdom of disciples who follow their master:

1Kings 19,19-21 : Then he left and followed Elijah, putting himself at his service.

2Kings 2,1-15 : Fifty sons of prophets followed them, standing in front of them at a distance.

Pr 5,13 : Why did I not listen to the voice of my teachers, nor listen to my educators?

Pr 10:17 : He who observes discipline is on the path of life; what goes wrong is what repression forgets.

Pr 23,12.26 : My son, give me your heart. May your eyes observe my ways.

– In the NT seventy-two disciples follow Jesus. But, among these, Jesus selected only twelve closest, called apostles:

Lk 10:1 : After that, the Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples.

Mt 10,1 : Jesus gathered his twelve disciples.

– But all who want to follow the doctrine of Jesus belong to his discipleship according to his requirements:

Mt 4,19-20 : And he said to them: “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men”.

Mt 8,21-22 : Again one of his disciples said to him: “Lord, let me go first to bury my father”.

Mt 10,24-25 : The disciple is no more than the master, the servant is no more than the boss.

Mt 11,28-30 : Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Mt 16:24 : If anyone wants to come with me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.

Mk 2:14 : He saw Levi […] and said to him: “Follow me”. And Levi, rising up, followed him.

Lk 9,57-58 : Lord, I will follow you wherever you go.

Lc 14,26-27.33 : If anyone comes to me and does not love me anymore […] even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

Lk 18,28-30 : Peter then said: “See, we have abandoned everything and followed you”.

Jo 13,31-36 : Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.

Acts 6: 1 : In those days, as the number of disciples increased.

Acts 9,1-25 : Meanwhile, Saul only breathed threats and death against the disciples of the Lord.

Acts 11:26 : In Antioch the disciples were called Christians for the first time.

Acts 21:16 : Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us.
