Glory

– The word glory denotes divine transcendence and majesty. That glory (or majesty) shines in heaven and earth:

Ps 18 : 2-7: The heavens tell the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims the work of his hands.

Ps 88,6-12 : Lord, the heavens celebrate your wonderful works, and in the assembly of angels, your faithfulness.

Ps 96 :6 : The heavens declare his righteousness, and all people see his glory.

Is 2,10.21 : Take refuge in the rocks […] under the impulse of the terror of the Lord, and the splendor of his majesty.

Is 6:3 : Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts! The whole earth proclaims his glory!

Is 24,14s : They raise their voices and sing, from the side of the sea they acclaim the majesty of the Lord.

– In the liberation of the people of Israel:

Ex 14:4 : I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them; but I will triumph gloriously over Pharaoh.

Is 66 :5: “May the Lord manifest his glory so that we may see your joy!” But, they will be confused.

Ez 28,22 : It is against you that I come, Sydonia; I will make my glory shine in your midst.

Ez 39,13 : All the peoples of the earth […] will be proud of the day when I manifest my glory.

– All glory belongs to God:

1Sm 6,5 : Give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps he will withdraw his hand from you and your god and your land.

Is 42,8 : I am the Lord, that is my name, I will give my glory to no one, nor my honor to idols.

Is 48,11 : To no one can I give my glory.

Jer 13:16 : Give glory to the Lord your God before the darkness comes.

Mal 2,2 : If you do not listen to me, if you do not take to heart the glory of my name.

Jn 9:24 : They called the man who had been blind again, saying to him: “Give glory to God!”.

– It shines in the Word and in his divine works:

Jn 1 :4 : In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Jn 11:4 : This illness […] is for the glory of God. Through it the Son of God will be glorified.

Jo 17,1.5.22 : Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.

– The glory of God shall constitute the blessedness of the saints:

Ex 33,18-23 : “Show me your glory.” And God replied, “I will make all my splendor pass before you.”

1Cor 15:43 : Sown in contempt, it rises in glory; sown in weakness, it is raised in strength.

2Cor 4,17 : Our present tribulation, momentary and slight, gives us an eternal weight of immeasurable glory.

Phil 2:11 : And every tongue confess, to the glory of God the Father, that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Col 1:27 : To these God wanted to make known the riches and glory of this mystery among the Gentiles.

1Pt 5,1.4.10 : I was a witness of the sufferings of Christ and I will be a partaker […] of that glory that will be manifested.

– The word glory means also the dwelling of God in the tabernacle:

Ex 16:10 : They looked towards the desert and, behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud!

Ex 29:43 : It is in this place that I will give an interview to the children of Israel, and it will be consecrated for my glory.

Ex 40:34 : Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

Leviticus 9:6 : This is what the Lord commands: Do it, and the glory of the Lord will appear to you.

Num 14:10 : The whole assembly was about to stone them, when the glory of the Lord appeared.

– In the Temple of Jerusalem:

1Kings 8,10s : Because the glory of the Lord filled the Temple of the Lord.

– In John, glory designates the sign by which the divinity of the Word is revealed to men: miracles, transfiguration, resurrection and apparitions are its main manifestation:

John 2:11 : He manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

Jo 11,4.40 : This illness […] has as its purpose the glory of God. Through it the Son of God will be glorified.

– On the human level, glory is the success achieved in undertakings, in wealth, in social status :

Gen 13 :2 : Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.

Gen 45:13 : Tell my father about the honors I receive in Egypt […] and then hurry him to come here.

1Ch 29,28 : He died in a happy old age, laden with days, riches and glory.

2Ch 17:5 : All Judah brought him gifts, and so Jehoshaphat had wealth in abundance and glory.

Job 19 : 9 : He has stripped me of my glory, he has taken the crown from my head.

Job 29,1-25 : I wish I could become as before, as in the days when God protected me.

Is 8:7 : The Lord will pour down on him the waters of the river, abundant and mighty.

Is 16:14 : Within three years, counted as the years of a wage earner, the sovereignty of Moab […] will be insignificant.

– Also for physical beauty and personal skills:

Ex 28,2-40 : You shall make holy garments for your brother Aaron as a sign of dignity and distinction.

Ps 8,6 : Yet you made him almost equal to the angels, with glory and honor you crowned him.

Is 35,1-2 : The glory of Lebanon will be given to it […] the glory of the Lord will be seen and the majesty of our God.

Is 60:13 : The glory of Lebanon will come to you, and all together, the cypress, the beech and the boxwood, to decorate my holy place.

Is 62,2 : Then the nations will see your victory, and all kings your triumph.

Ag 2 : Is there anyone among you who has seen this house in its first splendor? And in what state do you see her now!

– Glory is not lasting:

Ps 48,17-18 : Do not be afraid when someone becomes rich, when the luxury of his house increases.

– Must be based on moral values:

Pr 3:35 : Glory will be the reward of the wise, ignominy will be the inheritance of fools.

Pr 20 : It is a glory for man to abstain from strife; the fool, however, is the only one who seeks them out.

Eclo 3,18 : How infamous is he who leaves his father, how cursed is he who irritates his mother!

– Founding oneself on God, whose glory one seeks:

Ps 59,9-10 : Mine is the land of Gilead, mine is that of Manasseh; Ephraim is the helmet of my head; Judah, my scepter.

Ps 61,6-8 : Only in God does my soul rest, it is from him that what I hope comes to me.

Ps 72,24-25 : Your designs will guide me, and finally, in glory you will welcome me.

– Glory is attributed in the Bible above all to God:

Ex 24.10 : They saw the God of Israel. Beneath his feet was a slab of transparent sapphires.

Ps 95,6 : In his countenance, majesty and beauty; in his sanctuary, power and splendor.

Ps 103,1-2 : Bless the Lord, O my soul! Lord, my God, you are immensely great!

Rev 4,2-6 : Immediately, I was in the spirit; in heaven there was a throne, and on that throne sat a Being.

– In creation God manifests his glory:

Ex 14:21 : Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove him back with a rushing wind […] that blew all night.

Ps 18 : 2 : The heavens tell the glory of God, and the firmament declares his handiwork.

Psalm 56 : 6: Be lifted high, O God, to the highest heaven, and let your glory shine over all the earth.

Ps 71:19 : Blessed be his glorious name forever, and may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen! Amen!

Ps 101 :16 : And the heathen nations shall reverence your name, O Lord, and the kings of the earth shall pay homage to your glory.

Is 6:3 : Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts! The whole earth proclaims his glory!

Hab 3,3-4 : God comes from Teman, the Holy One comes from Mount Paran. His majesty covers the heavens, and the earth is filled with his glory.

– In his wonders and in the work of salvation:

Ex 14:18 : The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I have achieved this glorious triumph over Pharaoh.

Ex 16,7 : Tomorrow morning you will see his glory.

Num 14:22 : None of the men who saw my glory and the wonders I did in Egypt and in the desert.

Is 35,1-2 : The desert and the arid land will rejoice. […] will be seen the glory of the Lord and the magnificence of our God.

Is 40,10-11.28-29 : Behold the Lord God who comes with power […]. Behold with him the price of his victory.

Is 44,23 : Heavens, rejoice, for the Lord has acted: Shout for joy, depths of the earth!

– God’s faithfulness and mercy are his glory:

Ps 101,16-17 : The heathen nations will reverence your name, Lord, and the kings of the earth will pay homage to your glory.

– Many times the glory of God is manifested to men:

Leviticus 9:23 : And the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people.

Num 16:19 : And, behold, the glory of the Lord appeared to all the assembly.

Judg 5 : 5 : The mountains shook before the Lord, no less than Sinai, before the Lord, God of Israel!

– In the cloud:

Exodus 16:10 : The whole assembly of the Israelites looked towards the desert and, behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud!

Ex 40:34 : Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

Deut 4:11 : The mountain was burning with fire, whose flames rose to the depths of the sky, where there was darkness, clouds and gloom.

Deuteronomy 16:2 : Thou shalt sacrifice to the LORD thy God a paschal sacrifice, great and small cattle, in the place which he shall choose.

1 Kings 8:11 : The priests could not stay there […]; because the glory of the Lord filled the Temple of the Lord.

Ez 10,4 : While the splendor of the Lord’s glory filled the courtyard, the cloud invaded the temple.

– In the fire:

Ex 19:18 : All of Mount Sinai was in smoke, because the Lord had descended on it in the midst of flames.

Ex 24,15-17 : In the eyes of the Israelites, the glory of the Lord had the appearance of a consuming fire on the top of the mountain.

Deut 4:36 : He made you hear his voice from heaven for your instruction, and on earth he showed you his great fire.

Deut 5,4-5 : The Lord spoke to us face to face on the mountain, out of the midst of the fire.

– To attest your presence among the people:

Ex 40,34-35 : Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

2Ch 7,2 : The priests could not enter the Temple of the Lord, so much was the glory that filled the building.

Ez 1,26-27 : Above this vault there was a kind of throne […] right on top of this kind of throne, a human silhouette.

– The glory of God fled from the temple as a sign of the abandonment of the people:

Ez 10,4.10 : The glory of the Lord rose above the cherubim to the threshold of the temple.

Ez 11,22-23 : The cherubim unfolded their wings […] while the glory of the God of Israel rested upon them.

– To him, returning in sign of renewed alliance:

Ez 43,2-3 : And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the east [..] while the earth shone with its light.

– In the NT, in the birth of Christ Jesus, the beloved Son, the glory of God is mainly manifested:

Lc 2,9 : An angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they had great fear.

– In the transfiguration:

Lc 9,32.35 : When they woke up, they saw the glory of Jesus and the two characters in his company.

2Pt 1,17-18 : This is my beloved Son, in whom I have all my affection.

– In the course of your life:

Jn 1:14 : And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that the only Son receives from his Father.

Jn 2:11 : This was Jesus’ first miracle […] He manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

– In the miracles performed:

Jn 11:40 : Jesus answered him: “Did I not say to you, If you believe, you will see the glory of God?”. So they took away the stone.

– In his death and, above all, in his resurrection:

Mt 16:27 : For the Son of Man is to come in the glory of his Father with his angels.

Mk 13:26 : Then they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory.

Lk 24:26 : Was it not necessary for Christ to suffer these things and thus enter into his glory?

Jo 7,39 : He said this, referring to the Spirit that those who believed in him were to receive.

Jn 12:16.33 : His disciples […] when Jesus was glorified […] they remembered that this was written.

Jn 13:31 : Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

Jn 17,1-2 : Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.

– The Lord of glory:

1Cor 2,8 : For if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

– It entered:

Lk 24:26 : Was it not necessary for Christ to suffer these things and thus enter into his glory?

Acts 1,9.11 : Saying this, he rose from the (earth) in their sight and a cloud hid him from their eyes.

Acts 3:13 : The God of our fathers has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before Pilate.

1Tm 3,16 : Manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit […], believed in the world, exalted in glory!

1Pt 1:21 : You have faith in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him.

– Because it was given to him by the Father from the beginning:

Jn 17:5 : Now therefore, Father, glorify me with yourself by giving me the glory I had with you.

– The Lord Jesus will return in glory:

Mark 8:38 : The Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with his holy angels.

Mk 13:26 : Then they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory.

Rom 8:18 : The sufferings of this life have no proportion to the future glory that is to be revealed to us.

– We can give glory to God by manifesting his goodness and mercy or his greatness:

Lc 2,14 : Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth peace to men, objects of benevolence.

Lc 17,18 : Was only this foreigner found to return to thank God?!

Luke 19:38 : Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven!

John 9:24 : Give glory to God! We know this man is a sinner.

Jn 11:4 : This illness […] is for the glory of God. Through it the Son of God will be glorified.

– The light of God’s glory can be reflected in the being of the Christian:

2Cor 3,18–4,6 : Our faces are uncovered, we reflect the glory of the Lord as in a mirror and we see ourselves transformed.
