The Lord’s vengeance is a recurring theme in the Bible, but it can often be misunderstood or even cause fear in people. However, it is important to remember that divine justice is always fair, loving and balanced.
In the book of Abdias, we find a prophecy against Edom, a neighboring nation of Israel that opposed them on several occasions. In this prophecy, the Lord declares his vengeance against Edom: “For the day of the Lord is at hand, for all nations! As you have done, so shall it be done to you; your rewards will return on your own head.” (Abdias 1:15)
This revenge is not an arbitrary punishment, but a just response to the actions of the Edomites. The Bible teaches that God is just and that He does not tolerate evil. Divine justice is balanced, as it is written in Proverbs 11:1: “The Lord hates dishonest scales, but accurate weights give him pleasure.”
However, the Lord’s vengeance is not just about punishment. It is also about justice and liberation. In the Old Testament, God’s vengeance was often an answer to the prayers of people suffering at the hands of their enemies. In Isaiah 61:2, the prophet speaks of “the day of vengeance of our God” as a day of deliverance for the oppressed.
Thus, we can learn that divine justice is always balanced and loving, and that the Lord’s vengeance is a just and liberating response. This does not mean that we should wish our enemies destruction, but rather that we can trust God to do what is right and just. As it is written in Romans 12:19, “Beloved, never seek revenge, but let God be angry, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”
We can trust that God is just and that He will do what is right, even if justice sometimes seems to be taking its time. The Lord’s vengeance is a lesson that evil will never go unpunished, but that we can trust in divine justice to bring deliverance and redemption.
