Moses was an important figure in the history of the people of Israel, known for his leadership, faith and obedience to God. From the moment God chose him to lead his people out of Egypt, Moses faced countless challenges and adversity, but always trusting in God’s power to overcome them. Numbers 12 is an interesting example of how Moses dealt with the envy and rebellion of his own brother and sister.
Numbers 12 begins with a description of Miriam and Aaron speaking ill of Moses because of his Cushite wife. They wonder if God only speaks through Moses and consider themselves prophets as well. But God soon intervenes and rebukes Miriam and Aaron for their lack of respect for Moses’ leadership: “How dare you speak ill of my servant Moses?” (Numbers 12:8). This rebuke clearly shows the importance of Moses’ leadership to God and his willingness to defend his leader.
Moses is an example of leadership because he always puts God’s will first. He was not interested in his own power or influence, but in following God’s will and leading his people according to his commandments. This is evident in several biblical passages, such as when he refused to become the leader of a rebellious and disobedient people without God’s help (Exodus 33:15).
Furthermore, Moses’ faith and obedience to God are evident throughout his life. He always trusted in God, even in difficult and uncertain situations, like when the people of Israel were encamped in front of the Red Sea with the Egyptian army approaching. Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will bring today…. The Lord will fight for you; just be calm” (Exodus 14:13-14). Moses’ faith and obedience to God is also evident in his keeping God’s commandments and building the tabernacle as a place of worship to God.
Therefore, the life and example of Moses teach us that true leadership is one who puts God’s will first, who has faith and obedience to God, and who trusts in God’s power and protection at all times. We can learn a lot from Moses’ leadership and apply these teachings in our own lives, regardless of our position or role in society. May we follow Moses’ example and lead with humility, faith and obedience to God.
