Hell

– The word hell designates the abode of the wicked, a place of definitive condemnation, intuited in the OT:

Wis 3,10 : But the wicked will have the punishment that their thoughts deserve.

Eclo 21,10-11 : The assembly of sinners is like a heap of tow: its end will be the fire.

Dan 12:2 : Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awaken, some to eternal life, others to ignominy.

– In the NT, the word hell indicates the place of torment, designated by various names: gehenna, fiery furnace, abyss, tartar, lake of fire, second death:

Mt 10:28 : Rather be afraid of him who can hurl soul and body into hell.

Mt 13:42 : And they will cast them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Lk 8:31 : And they asked him not to order them to go into the abyss.

2Pt 2,4 : God did not spare the angels that sinned, but cast them into the dark abysses of hell.

Rev 19:20 : Both were thrown alive into the lake of sulphurous fire.

– Explained also as outer darkness and as a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth (shows desperation) or a place of continuous fire like Gehenna (divine wrath):

Mt 3,12 : The chaff, however, will be burned in an unquenchable fire.

Mt 5,22.29-30 : Whoever says to his brother: Fool, will be condemned to the fire of Gehenna.

Mt 8,12 : While the children of the Kingdom will be cast into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mt 10:28 : Rather be afraid of him who can hurl soul and body into hell.

Mt 13,41-42 : The Son of Man will send his angels, who will remove from his Kingdom all […] who do evil.

Mt 18,8-9 : It is better for you to enter life lame or lame than, having two feet and two hands, to be cast into eternal fire.

Mt 23,15.33 : You travel seas and lands to make a proselyte and, when you get him, you make him a son of hell.

Mt 25,30.41-42 : And that useless servant, cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mk 9,43-44 : It is better for you to enter life crippled than, having two hands, to go to Gehenna, to the unquenchable fire.

Mk 16:16 : Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Luke 10:15 : And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be thrown down to hell.

Lc 12,5 : I will show you whom you should fear: fear him who, after killing, has power to cast into hell.

Lk 16,22-23 : The beggar happened to die and be carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.

Rom 2 :5 : Because of your obstinacy and unrepentant heart, you are storing up anger against yourself for the day of wrath.

Heb 10:31 : It is horrible to fall into the hands of the living God.

Jas 3,6 : The tongue […] defiles the whole body; and being inflamed by hell, it sets fire to the course of our life.

2Pt 2,4 : God did not spare the angels that sinned, but cast them into the dark abysses of hell.

Rev 20:10 : The Devil, who had seduced them, was cast into a lake of fire and brimstone, where the Beast and the false prophet were already.

– Those condemned to hell are deprived of the sight of God:

Mt 7,23 : And yet I will say to them: I never knew you. Get away from me, you evil workers!

Mt 25,10.41 : The bridegroom came. Those who were ready went with him into the wedding hall, and the door was closed.

Lk 13,24-28 : Seek to enter through the narrow gate; because, I tell you, many will try to enter and will not succeed.

Lk 14:24 : For I say to you, none of those men who were invited will taste my supper.

Rev 2:11 : Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches: He who overcomes will not suffer any harm from the second death.

Rev 20,6.10 : Happy and holy is he who takes part in the first resurrection! Over them the second death has no power.

Rev 21:8 : The idolaters and all the liars will have as their share the pool burning with fire and brimstone, the second death.

– Other torments:

Mt 5,22 : Whoever says to his brother: imbecile, will be punished.

Mt 8:12 : The children of the Kingdom will be cast into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mt 13:42 : and they will cast them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mt 22:13 : Bind him hand and foot and cast him into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth there.

Mt 25:30 : And that useless servant, cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mk 9:47 : It is better for you to enter the Kingdom of God with one eye less than […] to be thrown into the Gehenna of fire.

Rev 14,9s : If anyone worships the Beast […] he must also drink the wine of divine wrath.

– Hell is eternal:

Mt 25,41.46 : Depart from me, cursed ones! Go into the eternal fire destined for the devil and his angels.

Lk 3:17 : He has a fan in his hand and will clear his threshing floor […] but he will burn the chaff with an unquenchable fire.

Luke 16:19-26 : There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen, and who feasted daily.

2Th 1,7-10 : He will descend from heaven with the messengers of his power, through flames of fire, to execute justice.

Revelation 14:11 : His torment will rise forever and ever. They will have no rest […] those who worship the Beast.

Rev 20,9-10 : They surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them.
