Jealousy

– This word is used in the Bible to designate the exclusive love that Yahweh demands of the Hebrew people:

Deut 4:24 : For the Lord your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.

Deuteronomy 32:16 : They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, they angered him with abominations.

Ex 20,5 : You shall not bow down to them and you shall not worship them. I am the Lord your God, a jealous God.

Ex 34:14 : Thou shalt not worship any other god, for the Lord, who is called the Jealous, is a jealous God.

Ps 77:58 : They provoked him to anger with their high places, and inflamed his zeal with their idols.

– This love is compared to that of spouses:

Ex 19,5 : Now therefore, if you obey my voice, and keep my covenant, you will be my particular people.

Ex 20,4-5 : You shall not make sculpture for yourself, or any likeness of what is in the heavens above.

Ex 34:14 : Thou shalt not worship any other god, for the Lord, who is called the Jealous, is a jealous God.
