John Baptist

– Had his birth announced:

Lk 1,5-25 : In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the class of Abijah.

Lc 1,57-66 : Completing the time for Elizabeth to give birth, she had a son.

– He preached about the coming of the Messiah, inviting the people to conversion:

Mt 3,1-12 : In those days, John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the Judean desert.

Mk 1,1-8 : John the Baptist appeared in the desert and preached a baptism of conversion for the remission of sins.

Lc 3,1-20 : The word of the Lord came to John, son of Zechariah in the desert. He traveled all over the Jordan region.

Jn 1,19-28 : This was the testimony of John, when the Jews sent him priests and Levites from Jerusalem.

– He baptized the people with water, as a sign of penance:

Mt 3:11 : I baptize you with water as a sign of penance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I.

– Announced the baptism of the Messiah in the Holy Spirit and in fire:

Acts 1 :5 : For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 11:16 : John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

– He baptized Jesus:

Mt 3:13 : Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him.

Mk 1,9ss : Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth, from Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Lc 3,21-22 : When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened.

Jo 1,31-34 : I didn’t know him, but if I came to baptize in water, it is so that he may become known in Israel.

– Was thrown into prison by order of Herod:

Mt 14,3-4 : Indeed, Herod had ordered John arrested and chained.

Mark 6:17-18 : For Herod himself had John arrested and chained in prison on account of Herodias.

Lk 3,19-20 : Herod the tetrarch, rebuked by him on account of Herodias, his brother’s wife.

– He sent messengers to Jesus to confirm that he was really the Messiah:

Mt 11,1-6 : Are you the one who should come, or should we wait for someone else?

Lk 7,18-23 : John’s disciples told him all these things.

– Recommended by Jesus:

Mt 11,7-15 : As they left, Jesus said to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the desert to see?”.

Lk 7,24-35 : He began to speak about John to the people: “What did you go out into the desert to see?”.

– Beheaded and buried:

Mt 14,6-12 : The daughter of Herodias danced among the guests and pleased Herod.

Mk 6,19-29 : Herodias hated him and wanted to kill him, but he couldn’t.

– Some thought that Jesus was John the Baptist resurrected:

Mt 14,1s : And he said to his courtiers: “It is John the Baptist who has risen. That’s why he works so many miracles.”

Mk 6,14ff : Herod heard about Jesus, whose name had become famous. It was said: “John the Baptist rose from the dead”.

Lk 9,7 : Herod heard about all that Jesus did and was perplexed. Some said: “It is John who rose from the dead”.

– Jesus asks: “Where was John’s baptism from?”:

Mt 21:25 : Where did John’s baptism come from: from heaven or from men?

Mt 21:32 : John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him. But the publicans and the harlots believed in him.

Mark 11:27-33 : As Jesus walked through the temple, the chief priests, scribes and elders approached him.

Lc 20,1-8 : One day, Jesus taught in the temple and announced the Good News to the people. The chief priests arrived.

– Jesus condemns those who did not believe in John the Baptist:

Mt 21:32 : John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him. But the publicans and the harlots believed in him.
