Light-darkness

– Like the moon, light and darkness are God’s creatures:

Gen 1,3-5 : God said: “Let there be light!”. And the light was made. God saw that the light was good, and he divided the light from the darkness.

Ps 18,2-3 : The heavens tell the glory of God, and the firmament declares the work of his hands.

Ps 103 : 20 : As soon as you extend the darkness and it is already night, the animals of the forests begin to prowl.

Ps 148,3 : Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, bright stars.

Is 45,7 : I formed the light and created darkness, I seek happiness and create unhappiness.

Dn 3,72 : Light and darkness, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him forever!

Amos 4:13 : He who formed the mountains and created the wind, the one […] who changes darkness into dawn.

– As such, they are invited to praise their Creator by the psalmist:

Ps 18,2-3 : The heavens tell the glory of God, and the firmament declares the work of his hands.

Ps 148,3 : Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, bright stars.

Dn 3,72 : Light and darkness, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him forever!

– The Semites appreciated the style of opposite terms, in this case making light and darkness antagonistic creatures:

Job 3,4-5 : May that day turn into darkness! May God above not be troubled by him, may the light not shine upon him!

Ps 26 :1 : The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the protector of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?

Is 5:20 : Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who change darkness into light and light into darkness.

Is 59,9 : We wait for the light, and behold the darkness; we wait for the day, and walk in darkness.

Is 60,1-2 : Arise, be radiant, here is your light! The glory of the Lord rises upon you.

Am 5,18.20 : Woe to those who desire to see the day of the Lord! What shall the day of the Lord be to you? Darkness and not light.

– In the NT Jesus presents himself as the light that came into the world to free us from the darkness of sin:

Mt 17,2 : There he was transfigured in their presence: his face shone like the sun, his clothes became dazzling.

Lk 11:35 : Take care, therefore, that the light that is in you is not darkness.

Jo 1,4-5.9 : In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Jn 3:19 : Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Jo 8,12 : I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

Jo 9,5 : Therefore, while I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

Jo 12,35-36.46 : Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness does not overtake you.

Eph 5:8 : You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord: behave like true lights.

1Jn 2,8-9 : For the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.

– Also to heathen nations:

Lc 2,32 : As a light to lighten the nations, and for the glory of your people Israel.

Acts 5:14 : The multitude of men and women who believed in the Lord increased more and more.

– Hence the advice of the apostles to walk in the light, that is, in the doctrine of Christ:

Rom 2:19 : You who boast of being a guide for the blind, a light for those in darkness.

Rom 13:12 : The night is far advanced, and the day is at hand. Let us put off the works of darkness and put on the weapons of light.

Eph 5,8-9 : You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord: behave like true lights.

1Th 5,5 : For all of you are children of light and children of the day. We are not of the night or darkness.

1Jn 1 :7 : If, however, we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have reciprocal fellowship with one another.

1Jn 2,10-11 : Whoever loves his brother remains in the light and does not stumble.
