– One of the greatest characters of the OT, he was chosen by God to free the Jews, his compatriots, from slavery in Egypt and lead them to the Promised Land:
Ex 3,7-15 : I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cries because of their oppressors.
Exodus 16:22 : All the heads of the assembly came and told Moses.
– Despite the order to kill all the firstborn of the Hebrews, he was saved by the pharaoh’s own daughter:
Ex 2:10 : When the boy grew up, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him as her son and named him Moses.
– For this reason, he received Egyptian training:
Acts 7:22 : Moses was instructed in all the sciences of the Egyptians and became strong in words and deeds.
– Guided by God, he crossed the desert in search of the land prepared for them:
Ex 15,22–18,27 : Moses led the Israelites out of the Red Sea and led them to the desert of Sur.
Num 11-14 : The people began to murmur bitterly in the ears of the Lord.
Num 20–21 : The whole assembly of the children of Israel arrived in the desert of Sin in the first month.
– Next to Mount Sinai, God gives him the Tables of the Law to explain to the people:
Ex 19–24 : In the third month after their departure from Egypt, on that day, the Israelites entered the Sinai desert.
– After the people agreed to comply with the Law and all ritual and social norms, God made a covenant with his people:
Ex 24,1-8 : God said to Moses: “Go up to the Lord, with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu and seventy elders of Israel, and prostrate yourselves at a distance”.
– Dies without being able to enter the Promised Land:
Deuteronomy 32 :44-52: You will see the land ahead of you that I will give to the Israelites, but you will not enter it.
– When Jesus was transfigured on top of Mount Tabor, Moses appeared representing the Law:
Mt 17,3-4 : And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared talking with him.
Mk 9,4-5 : Elijah and Moses appeared to them […]. Peter took the word: “Master, it is good for us to be here”.
Lc 9,30 : And behold, two characters were talking with him: they were Moses and Elijah.
– Tradition points to Moses as the author of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible:
Deut 31,9.24 : Moses wrote this Law and gave it to the priests sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord.
Jos 1,7.13 : Be of courage therefore, and be courageous to carefully observe all the law that Moses, my servant, prescribed for you.
Jos 23:6 : Strive therefore to put into practice all that is written in the book of the Law of Moses.
2Kings 14 :6 : But he did not kill the sons of the murderers, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses.
Mt 19,8 : Jesus answered them: It is because of the hardness of your heart that Moses had tolerated the repudiation of women.
Mk 10,3 : He answered them: “What did Moses command you?”.
Jn 8,5 : Moses commanded us in the Law to stone such women. What do you say about that?
