Slavery

– Socioeconomic system based on the enslavement of people. The Jews themselves were slaves in Egypt:

Ex 21,1-11 : In this way, the slave will be at his service forever.

Ex 22,2 : He will make restitution: if he has nothing, he will be sold in compensation for his theft.

2 Kings 4:1 : Your servant died […]. Now, behold, the creditor came to take my two sons to make them his slaves.

Ne 5,5 : Behold, it was necessary to enslave our sons and daughters […] among our daughters, there are some who are already slaves.

Am 2,6 : Because they sell the righteous for money, and the poor for a pair of sandals.

Am 8,6 : We will buy the wretched for money and the poor for a pair of sandals.

– So much in the OT there was slavery:

Gen 17:12 : Like what you buy for money from any foreigner who is not of your race.

Ex 21,2-3 : When you buy a Hebrew slave, he will serve six years; on the seventh he will go free, without paying anything.

Leviticus 25:39-40 : If your brother becomes poor along with you and he sells himself to you, you shall not demand slave service from him.

Deut 15:12-18 : When your Hebrew brother, male or female, has sold himself to you, he shall serve you six years.

Deut 21:10 : When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God delivers them into your hand.

– As for NT:

1Cor 7,24.31 : Brethren, each one remain before God in the condition in which he was when God called him.

Rom 10:12 : For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for they all have one Lord.

1Cor 12:13 : By one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free.

Gal 3:28 : There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female.

Col 3:11 : There will be neither Greek nor Jew, neither barbarian nor Scythian, neither slave nor free.

Fm 6 : Be active and make known all the good that is done among us because of Christ.

– In the spiritual sense, it is the image of someone who is dependent on an addiction:

Jn 8,32-33 : We are descendants of Abraham and we have never been slaves to anyone. How do you say: “You will be free?”.

Rm 7,25-26 : By my spirit, I am subject to the Law of God; on the other hand, by my flesh I am a slave to the law of sin.

Rom 8:14-15 : Because you have not received a spirit of slavery to live in fear.

Gal 4,4-5.24 : Who was born of a woman and born subject to a Law, in order to redeem those who were under the Law.

Gal 5:1 : Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

1Jn 3,1-2 : Consider with what love the Father loved us, that we should be called children of God.
