Deuteronomy is one of the Old Testament books that brings important teachings about gratitude to God. Chapter 8, verses 10 to 18, talks about the importance of recognizing that everything we have comes from God and being grateful for it.
According to verse 10, when the people of Israel entered the promised land and enjoyed its many benefits, they were to remember that everything they had came from God and thank Him for it: “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.”
God wants us to be grateful not only for what we have but also for what He does for us. Verse 14 says, “Then your heart will be lifted up, and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.” This verse warns us of the danger of forgetting God when things are going well. Instead, we should always remember that everything we have comes from God and be grateful to Him.
Verse 17 warns us of the arrogance that can come from a lack of gratitude: “Do not say in your heart, My strength and the might of my arm have gotten me these riches.” This reminds us not to be proud of our achievements, but to recognize that everything we have comes from God.
Finally, verse 18 reminds us that it is God who gives us the ability to make riches: “But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you strength to get riches.” We should therefore thank God not only for what we have, but also for the fact that we have the ability to work and achieve things.
In summary, Deuteronomy teaches us that we should be grateful to God for everything we have and for everything He does for us. We must always remember that everything comes from God and be humble and grateful for it.
