Baptism

– It was administered by John the Baptist as a sign of penance and change of life:

Mt 3,6-12 : They confessed their sins and were baptized by him in the waters of the Jordan.

Mt 21,24-27 : Where did John’s baptism come from: from heaven or from men?

Mk 1,4-8 : John the Baptist appeared in the desert and preached a baptism of conversion for the remission of sins.

Lc 3,3-6 : He traveled all over the Jordan region, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Jn 1,25-28 : John answered: “I baptize with water, but among you there is one whom you do not know”.

Acts 19,3-7 : John only gave a baptism of penance.

– Jesus is baptized by John:

Mt 3,13-17 : Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him.

– Prophesied in the OT as cleansing from sin:

Ps 50:9 : Sprinkle myself with a branch of hyssop and I will be clean. Wash me and I will become whiter than snow.

Ez 36:25 : I will pour out pure waters on you, which will purify you […] from all your abominations.

Zec 13,1 : The Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen belt and put it over your kidneys, without […] dipping it in water”.

1Pt 1,3.23 : For you were regenerated not of corruptible seed, but by the Word of God.

1Pt 3,20-21 : Through him you have faith in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him.

– Prefigured by the flood as regeneration, baptism was elevated by Jesus to a sacrament:

Mt 28:19 : Go therefore and teach all nations; baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Mk 16:16 : Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Jn 3 :5: Truly, I say to you, whoever is not born again of water and the Spirit will not be able to enter the Kingdom of God.

Jn 3,5.22-24 : John was also baptizing in Aenon, near Salim, because there was plenty of water there.

Jn 4,1s : The Lord learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was recruiting and baptizing more disciples than John.

Acts 2,38-41 : Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

Acts 8:12 : They believed in Philip, who was announcing to them the Kingdom of God […], men and women asked to be baptized.

Acts 19:5-7 : When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 22:16 : Receive baptism and cleanse yourself of your sins, calling on his name.

1Cor 1,14-17 : Thank God, I did not baptize any of you, with the exception of Crispus and Gaius.

– Efficacy and effects of Christian baptism:

Acts 10 :44-48: Can one withhold the water of baptism from those who have received the Holy Spirit like us?

Acts 19:5-6 : On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Rom 6:1-5 : We were therefore buried with him in his death by baptism.

1Cor 12:13 : By one Spirit we were all baptized to form one body.

1Cor 15:29 : Otherwise, what do those intend who are baptized on behalf of the dead?

Gal 3:26-29 : All of you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Col 2:12 : Buried with him in baptism, you also rose with him through your faith in the power of God.

Titus 3 :5 : He saved us through the baptism of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.

– The water of the flood prefigured Christian baptism:

1Pt 3:21 : This water prefigured the baptism of now, which saves you also.

– The baptismal rite means immersion in the death-resurrection of Christ, to be reborn free from sin:

Acts 2:38 : Peter answered them: “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ”.

Acts 22:16 : And now why are you delaying? Get up. He receives baptism and cleanses you of your sins, calling on his name.

Rom 6,1-4 : We, who have already died to sin, how could we still live in it?

Col 2,12-13 : Buried with him in baptism, you also rose with him through your faith in the power of God.

– In addition to saving, it unites Christians by the Spirit of the Lord:
