– Designates the person who copied manuscripts or wrote dictated texts. Among the Jews, he was also the one who read and interpreted the Law of Moses for the people, in the synagogues and in the Temple:

Es 7,6 : This Esdras came from Babylon. He was a scribe versed in the Law of Moses given by the Lord.

– In the NT, he often reproached the scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees and priests because they interpreted the Law literally:

Mt 5:20 : I say to you, if your righteousness is not greater than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Mt 7:29 : Indeed, he taught her as one having authority and not as their scribes.

Mt 23,2.13 : The scribes and the Pharisees sat in Moses’ seat.

Mk 9:14 : Then, approaching the disciples, he saw a large crowd around them, and the scribes arguing with them.

Mk 12:38 : Beware of the scribes who like to wear long clothes.

Lk 6 :7 : Now the scribes and the Pharisees watched Jesus to see if he would heal on the Sabbath day.

Lk 20,46 : Beware of the scribes, who want to wear long clothes and like greetings in public squares.

Lc 22,2 : The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to kill Jesus, but they feared the people.
