Servant of the Lord

– Refers to the mysterious Servant of Yahweh referred to by the prophet Isaiah:

Is 42,1-7 : Behold my Servant whom I support, my chosen one to whom I give all my affection.

Is 49,1-6 : And he said to me: “You are my Servant Israel, in whom I will rejoice”.

Is 50,4-10 : The Lord God has given me the tongue of a disciple so that I may know how to comfort the downcast with a word.

Is 52,13–53,8-12 : Behold, my Servant will prosper, he will grow, he will be lifted up, he will be exalted.

– Light of the nations:

Is 49,1-6 : It is not enough that you are my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob I will make you the light of the nations.

– To restore Israel:

Is 49,7-9 : I formed you and appointed you to make a covenant with the peoples, to restore the country.

– To comfort the downcast with words:

Is 50,4-10 : The Lord God has given me the tongue of a disciple so that I may know how to comfort the downcast with a word.

– He is interpreted by tradition as a typical figure of Jesus, who offers himself as a victim for the sins of the people:

Acts 3:13-14 , 18, 25 : The God of our fathers glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied.

Acts 4:27-28 : For indeed, in this city they were united against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

Acts 8,32-33 : He was taken to the slaughterhouse; and like a lamb that is silent before him that shears him, he opened not his mouth.

1Pt 2,21-22 : Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example so that you should follow in his steps.

– Welcoming, meek and humble:

Mt 11,28-30 : Take my yoke upon you and receive my doctrine, for I am meek and humble in heart.

– In your name, heathen nations will hope:

Mt 12,18-21 : In his name the pagan nations will put their hope.

– The Good News is announced to the poor:

Lc 7,21-23 : The deaf hear, the dead are raised, the Gospel is preached to the poor.

– Jesus, although being Master and Lord, serves the apostles and washes their feet:

John 13:1-20 : Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with a towel.

– And he gives his life for the people as a supreme proof of love:

Mt 20,26-27 : It must not be like this among you. Whoever wants to become great among you must become your servant.

Mk 10,43-44 : Among you, however, it will not be like this: whoever wants to become great among you, let him be your servant.

Lc 22,37 : This oracle must also be fulfilled in me: And he was numbered among the evildoers (Is 53,12).

Jn 15:13 : Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

– From then on, his disciples call themselves servants:

Rom 1 :1 : Paul, servant of Jesus Christ, chosen to be an apostle, reserved to proclaim the Gospel of God.

Gal 1:10 : If I still wanted to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Phil 1:1.5 : Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Jesus Christ.

– And Mary, Mother of God and ours, handmaid of the Lord:

Lk 1,30-38.48 : Then Mary said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word”.

– In the AT, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua and the prophets are called servants:

Gen 24:14 : Drink, and I will water your camels as well – that is what you intended for your servant Isaac.

Ex 14:31 : Therefore, the people feared the Lord and trusted in him and in his servant Moses.

Ex 32:13 : Remember Abraham, Isaac and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by you.

Num 12 :7 : But it is not so concerning my servant Moses, who is faithful in all my house.

Deut 34 :5: And Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, as the Lord had decided.

Josh 24:29 : And it came to pass after this that Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten years.

1Kings 8:56 : Not a word of all the good words he spoke by the mouth of his servant Moses failed.

2 Kings 17:23 : Until the day the Lord banished them from his presence, as he had announced by the mouth of his servants the prophets.

Ezekiel 37:25 : They shall live in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your fathers lived.

Jer 7:25 : From the day your fathers left Egypt until now, I have sent all my servants to you.

Am 3,7 : For the Lord Yahweh does nothing without revealing his secret to the prophets, his servants.
