Solomon

– Son of King David and Beersheba, he was loved by God and was named Beloved of Yahweh:

2Sm 12,24-25 : She conceived and gave birth to a son, whom she named Solomon. The Lord loved him.

– Succeeded his father and was anointed king:

1Kings 1:32-40 : There Zadoc the priest and Nathan the prophet will anoint him king of Israel.

1 Kings 2:12-46 : Solomon sat on the throne of David, his father, and his kingdom was solidly established.

– Married the pharaoh’s daughter:

1Kings 3 :1 : Solomon allied himself by marriage with Pharaoh, king of Egypt, taking his daughter as wife.

– Praised by God for having asked him for wisdom and not earthly goods:

1Kings 3:5-15 : Give your servant a wise heart, able to judge your people and discern between good and evil.

– He judged wisely:

1Kings 3,16-28 : Hearing the judgment pronounced by the king, […] it was clear that he was inspired by divine wisdom.

– Built the Temple:

1Kings 6,1-38 : Solomon, in the fourth year of his reign […] undertook the construction of the Temple of the Lord.

– God made a covenant with him:

1Kings 9,1-9 : The Lord said to him: “I have heard your prayer and your supplication; I have consecrated this house that you built for me.”

– But he turned away from the Lord:

1 Kings 11:1-43 : Seven hundred wives of princely rank and three hundred concubines. And his women perverted his heart.

– It is quoted in the NT:

Mt 6:29 : Solomon himself, at the height of his glory, was not dressed like one of these.

Mt 12:42 : The Queen of the South will rise up […] because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon.

Lk 11:31 : The queen […] came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom!

Lk 12:27 : Yet I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like one of these.
