– Relating to God, religion, cult or to what received a special consecration, as in the OT:

1 Kings 8:10 : When the priests left the holy place, the cloud filled the Temple of the Lord.

– And it is opposed to profane, therefore demanding norms of purification before sacred acts or for the sacredness of the place:

Ex 3,1-5 : Do not approach here. Take your sandals off your feet, because the place where you are standing is holy ground.

Ex 19,10-15 : Go to the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow. Let them wash their clothes.

Leviticus 7:20-21 : But whoever eats it while unclean will be cut off from his people.

Lev 13–15 : After examining him, the priest will verify the fact and declare the man unclean.

Mt 21,12-13 : Jesus entered the temple and expelled all those who were involved in trade.

Jn 2,13-17 : The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Jn 18:28 : But the Jews did not enter the praetorium, lest they defile themselves and be able to eat the Passover.
