To be a disciple of Jesus is to follow his teachings and his example of life, placing him as Lord and Savior. In Matthew 16:24-26, Jesus said, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his he will find his life for my sake. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?”
Being a disciple of Jesus requires us to be faithful to Him, putting Him first in our lives. This means that we are to love him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). We also need to obey Jesus’ commandments, such as loving our enemies (Matthew 5:44) and forgiving those who trespass against us (Matthew 6:14-15).
Being a disciple of Jesus doesn’t mean we won’t have problems or difficulties in life, but it does mean that He will be with us at all times. Jesus promised to be with us always, until the end of time (Matthew 28:20). Furthermore, being a disciple of Jesus also means that we will have eternal life with Him in heaven (John 3:16).
Being a disciple of Jesus is not something we can do alone. We need the Holy Spirit to help us be faithful and obedient to Jesus. The Holy Spirit enables us to live according to Jesus’ teachings and helps us to grow spiritually.
In short, being a disciple of Jesus means following his teachings, loving and obeying him, even if it means denying ourselves and taking up our cross. It means that He is the Lord and Savior of our lives and that we are willing to serve Him and follow His ways. Being a disciple of Jesus is a journey of faith and spiritual growth that leads to abundant life here on earth and eternal life in heaven.
