Noah

– In Hebrew, Noah , which means rest. Hence his father Lamech prophesied that he would bring relief to the land which the Lord had cursed:

Gn 5,29 : This one will bring us, in our toils and in the hard labor of our hands, relief taken from the earth.

1Ch 1,4 : Noah, Shem, Cam and Japheth.

– It is in the genealogy of Jesus:

Lk 3:36 : Son of Cainan, son of Arphaxad, son of Shem, son of Noah, son of Lamech.

– Followed the Law of God:

Gen 6:9: This is the story of Noah: Noah was a just and perfect man among the men of his generation.

– By divine order, he built an ark to save himself, his family and the animals from the flood:

Gen 6,11-22–7,1-24 : God said to Noah: “Behold, the end of every creature has come before me”.

– Built an altar:

Gen 8,20-22 : And Noah built an altar to the Lord: he took of all the clean animals and of all the clean birds, and offered them.

– He made a covenant with God, who promised there would be no more flood:

Gen 9,8-17 : God also said to Noah and his sons: “I will make a covenant with you and with your posterity”.

– Promise recalled by Isaiah when speaking of the new Jerusalem:

Is 54,9 : Do today as in Noah’s time: just as I swore then that Noah’s flood would no longer fall on the earth.

– It is cited in the NT as an example of what will happen at the unexpected coming of the Son of God:

Mt 24:37 : As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.

Lk 17:26 : As it happened in the days of Noah, so it will happen in the days of the Son of Man.

– Presented as a model of faith, alongside other patriarchs:

Heb 11:7: By faith in the Word of God, Noah was warned of unpredictable events.

– Pointed out as an example of divine reward to pious men:

1Pt 2,5 : Like other living stones, you also become the materials of this spiritual building, a holy priesthood.

– The waters of the flood prefigure baptism:

1Pt 3:20 : God was waiting […] while the ark was being built, in which few people […] were saved through water.
