Daniel chapter 7 describes a dream the prophet had in which four different beasts came out of the sea. Each of these beasts has distinct characteristics and symbolizes different kingdoms that would arise in the future. Let’s analyze each of these beasts separately:
The first wild beast is described as a lion with eagle’s wings. It represents the kingdom of Babylon, which was the first major world power after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC.
The second beast is a bear with three ribs in its mouth. This bear symbolizes the Medo-Persian Empire, which conquered Babylon in 539 BC The three ribs represent the three great empires that were conquered by the Persians: Lydia, Babylon and Egypt.
The third wild beast is a leopard with four wings and four heads. This beast represents the Greek Empire of Alexander the Great, who conquered Persia in 333 BC The four heads represent the four generals who took over the empire after Alexander’s death.
The fourth beast is described as a terrible and frightening creature with teeth of iron and ten horns. This beast symbolizes the Roman Empire, which succeeded the Greek Empire. The ten horns represent ten kings who would arise after the fall of the Roman Empire.
In addition to these four beasts, the dream also describes the coming of the Son of Man, who is Jesus Christ. He is described as a human being who comes on the clouds of heaven and receives from God an eternal kingdom that will never be destroyed. This kingdom is symbolized by the stone that crushes the statue in another dream described in Daniel 2.
Daniel’s vision of the four wild beasts and the coming of the Son of Man is a prophecy of historical events that would take place in the centuries to come. It shows how God has control over human history and how He is working to establish His kingdom on earth.
