What is the story of the celebration of the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) described in 2 Maccabees 10:39-45?

The Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) is a Jewish celebration commemorating the purification and rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over invading Syrians in the second century BC. Although not mentioned in the Old Testament, the story of Hanukkah is told in the book of 2 Maccabees.

In chapter 10, verses 39-45, the author narrates that Judas Maccabeus, leader of the Jews, and his followers had retaken Jerusalem and purified the Temple, which had been desecrated by the Syrians. After that, they decided to celebrate the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) for eight days.

During the celebration, the Jews lit the lights of the seven-branched candelabrum, known as the Menorah, in the Temple. However, there was only enough oil to keep the lights on for one day, and it would be eight days before the oil could be produced again. But, according to tradition, the lights miraculously remained lit for eight days, allowing the celebration of the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) to continue.

Although the book of 2 Maccabees is not considered canonical by the Catholic Church, the story of Hanukkah is widely recognized by Jews as a symbol of resistance and victory over religious oppression. The celebration of the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) is an opportunity for Jews to reflect on the importance of religious freedom and the need to resist oppression and intolerance.
